Streptococcus agalactiae Causing Neonatal Infections in Portugal (2005–2015): Diversification and Emergence of a CC17/PI-2b Multidrug Resistant Sublineage

TL;DR: It is identified for the first time in Europe a recently emerging sublineage characterized by the loss of PI-1 (CC17/PI-2b), simultaneously resistant to macrolides, lincosamides, and tetracycline, also exhibiting high-level resistance to streptomycin and kanamycin.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular Characterization of the Complete 23F Capsular Polysaccharide Locus of Streptococcus pneumoniae

TL;DR: The complete DNA sequence of the capsular locus 23F of Streptococcus pneumoniae is presented and it is shown that the locus is composed of 18 open reading frames flanked at the 5' and 3' ends by the genes dexB and aliA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genomic analysis reveals the molecular basis for capsule loss in the group B Streptococcus population.

TL;DR: Genome based phylogenetic analysis extended to a wide population of sequenced strains confirmed the recently observed high clonality among GBS lineages mainly containing human strains, and revealed a much higher degree of diversity in the bovine population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Acquisition of new capsular genes among clinical isolates of antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae.

TL;DR: Analysis of the sequence of the capsular locus of a penicillin-resistant serotype 23F isolate from Mexico showed that part of the cpsA gene of this strain, as well as genes cpsQ and cpsR, had high degrees of identity to the sequences of the homologous genes in isolates expressing serotype 19F.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rapid Inversion of the Prevalences of Macrolide Resistance Phenotypes Paralleled by a Diversification of T and emm Types among Streptococcus pyogenes in Portugal

TL;DR: In Portugal erythromycin resistance of 26.6% remained constant during 1998 to 2003, however in 1998 the MLSB phenotype dominated, whereas in 2003 the M phenotype prevailed.
