Ganglion cell responses to retinal light stimulation in the absence of photoreceptor outer segments from retinal degenerate rodents.
Gi Jung An,Nobuya Asayama,Mark S. Humayun,James D. Weiland,J. Cao,Shang Yeon Kim,Rhonda Grebe,Eugene de Juan,Srinivas R. Sadda +8 more
TL;DR: This study suggests that despite the apparent absence of photoreceptor outer segments and a non-recordable ERG, ganglion cell responses to retinal light stimulation may remain preserved in some severe retinal degenerate transgenic rodents.
Journal ArticleDOI
One-Year Follow-Up in a Phase 1/2a Clinical Trial of an Allogeneic RPE Cell Bioengineered Implant for Advanced Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Amir H. Kashani,Jane Lebkowski,Firas M. Rahhal,Robert L. Avery,Hani Salehi-Had,Sanford Chen,Clement Chan,Neal V. Palejwala,April Ingram,Wei Dang,Chih-Min Lin,Debbie Mitra,Britney O Pennington,Cassidy R. Hinman,Mohamed A Faynus,Jeffrey K Bailey,Sukriti Mohan,Narsing A. Rao,Lincoln V. Johnson,Dennis O. Clegg,David R. Hinton,Mark S. Humayun +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, a composite subretinal implant having polarized human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells on an ultrathin parylene substrate was tested in subjects with advanced non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration (NNAMD).
Journal ArticleDOI
Flexible ultrasound-induced retinal stimulating piezo-arrays for biomimetic visual prostheses
Laiming Jiang,Gengxi Lu,Yushun Zeng,Yizhe Sun,Haochen Kang,James L. Burford,Chen Gong,Mark S. Humayun,Yong Chen,Qifa Zhou +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a flexible ultrasound-induced retinal stimulating piezo-array is presented for evoking visual percepts in blind individuals by integrating a two-dimensional piezo array with 32-pixel stimulating electrodes in a flexible printed circuit board.

Filling and implanting accommodative intraocular lenses
TL;DR: In this paper, an accommodative liquid lens may be attached to or retained within a handheld surgical tool, which can be fluidly connectable to a filling console to fill the lens with a liquid.

Modulating photoreactivity in a cell
TL;DR: In this article, an isolated optical trigger on the surface or in the membrane of the cell is used to modulate photoreactivity in a cell by incorporating a cell bearing incorporated with optical triggers.
