When asked to explain the importance of the discovery of conducting polymers, I offer two basic answers: first they did not (could not?) exist, and second, that they offer a unique combination of properties not available from any other known materials. The first expresses an intellectual challenge; the second expresses a promise for utility in a wide variety of applications.

We studied the main and the satellite signals of plane-site Cu(2) nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra in optimally doped YBa 2 (Cu 1− x Zn x ) 3 O 7− δ . The Cu nuclear spin–lattice relaxation time is found to distribute in the broadened Cu(2) NQR spectra. This is in contrast to nearly frequency independent relaxation in slightly oxygen-deficient YBa 2 Cu 3 O y . The Cu nuclear spin–lattice relaxation time of the Zn-induced satellite signal is shorter than that of the main signal, suggesting a locally enhanced magnetic correlation by Zn. From the analysis of Zn-induced Cu NQR relaxation, the origin of pair-breaking mechanism due to Zn impurity is discussed.

Present Status of R & D for Superconducting Flywheels

We have successfully melt-processed La-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors which exhibit high T c and large J c values. The employment of a 0.1% O 2 -Ar atmosphere and a Ba-rich La 4- x Ba 2+ x Cu 2- x O 10-2 x second phase as a precursor was the key to obtaining a high T c phase. Fabricated bulk samples exhibit onset T c of 94 K and the secondary peak effect in the J c - B curve. The respective peak position and the irreversibility field were 1 T and 4.5 T at 77 K and the J c at the peak field was about 18000 A cm −2 .

Melt processing of La-Ba-Cu-O superconductors with high Tc

Automated electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was employed to study the local orientations of embedded Y2BaCuO5 (Y-211) particles within the YBa2Cu3Ox (Y-123) superconducting matrix of large grain, melt-textured Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) samples. High-quality Kikuchi patterns were obtained, enabling automated mapping of the individual crystal orientations and a two-phase analysis of the samples. Investigations were performed on a variety of melt-textured YBCO samples, including samples with different element additions. We observe from the maps that the embedded Y-211 particles do not have any preferred orientation in melt-textured YBCO with (001) orientation, and that the YBCO growth is not altered for certain orientations of the Y-211 particles. In samples with (100) orientation, on the other hand, we observe only a small misorientation within the YBCO matrix, and the embedded Y-211 particles do not exhibit any texture. We can conclude from the EBSD maps obtained that the formation of small Y-211 particles does not disturb the Y-123 matrix growth, whereas the presence of large Y-211 particles leads, significantly, to the formation of subgrains.
