When asked to explain the importance of the discovery of conducting polymers, I offer two basic answers: first they did not (could not?) exist, and second, that they offer a unique combination of properties not available from any other known materials. The first expresses an intellectual challenge; the second expresses a promise for utility in a wide variety of applications.

Recently, bulk-type high-Tc superconductors (HTSs) having a characteristic of critical current density over 104 A/cm2 in liquid nitrogen (77 K) and at 1 T have been produced. They are promising for many practical applications such as a magnetic bearing, a magnetic levitation, a flywheel, a magnetic shielding, and others. In this research, we propose a magnetic circuit that can be used as a magnetic shield for several superconductors as an application of the HTS. It is a closed magnetic circuit by means of a toroidal core. Characteristics of the magnetic circuit surrounded with HTSs are evaluated and the possibility is examined. Because the magnetic circuit of the ferrite core is surrounded with HTSs, the magnetic flux is shielded even if it leaks from the ferrite core. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Proposal of magnetic circuit using magnetic shielding with bulk‐type high‐Tc superconductors—evaluation of magnetic circuits using toroidal core

Transport properties and tunneling characteristics of 45° asymmetric grain boundary junctions, fabricated in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− δ films grown by liquid phase epitaxy, have been studied. For selected samples, with very low zero field critical current density, a conductance peak in the d I /d V vs V curves has been observed below T c . The position and amplitude of this peak depend on the magnetic field and temperature, indicating its superconducting origin. Strong oxygen doping effect on the gap energy was also found.

Magnetization Measurement of (Nd-Eu-Gd)Ba2Cu3Oy Having Very High Irreversiblity Fields in Pulsed Magnetic Fields

In this study, we experimentally evaluate the ion transportation through a cone guide target, which accelerates ions up to MeV energies via target normal sheath acceleration, and transports them onto the position of imploding fuel in the fast ignition scenario of nuclear fusion. We measured the electric and magnetic fields (EM-fields) induced by return current streaming along the cone wall by proton radiography, and we report that the EM-fields are predominantly induced within a temporal window up to 30 ps after the laser injection. The magnitude of the electric field is maximized around 13 ps, reaching $4.0\times 10^{10} \mathrm {V}\ \mathrm {m}^{-1}$, when the magnetic field is below 200 T. The present scheme provides insights on the EM-fields evaluation in the time region that is difficult to treat with simulations due to the computing resources.
