Journal ArticleDOI
Pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent the acquisition of HIV-1 infection (PROUD): effectiveness results from the pilot phase of a pragmatic open-label randomised trial.
Sheena McCormack,David Dunn,Monica Desai,David Dolling,Mitzy Gafos,Richard Gilson,Richard Gilson,Ann Sullivan,Amanda Clarke,Iain Reeves,Gabriel Schembri,Nicola Mackie,Christine Bowman,Charles J.N. Lacey,Vanessa Apea,Michael Brady,Julie Fox,Stephen Taylor,Simone Antonucci,Saye Khoo,James F. Rooney,Anthony Nardone,Martin Fisher,Alan McOwan,Andrew N. Phillips,Anne M Johnson,Brian Gazzard,ON Gill +27 more
TL;DR: In this high incidence population, daily tenofovir–emtricitabine conferred even higher protection against HIV than in placebo-controlled trials, refuting concerns that effectiveness would be less in a real-world setting.
Journal ArticleDOI
BHIVA/BASHH guidelines on the use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) 2018.
Michael Brady,Alison Rodger,David Asboe,Valentina Cambiano,Dan Clutterbuck,Monica Desai,Nigel Field,Justin Harbottle,Zahra Jamal,Sheena McCormack,Adrian Palfreeman,Mags Portman,Killian Quinn,Melinda Tenant-Flowers,Ed Wilkins,Ingrid Young +15 more
TL;DR: These guidelines are aimed at clinical professionals directly involved in, and responsible for, HIV prevention, and at community advocates and organisations responsible for supporting HIV prevention strategies in those at risk of HIV acquisition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variable fate of virus-specific CD4+ T cells during primary HIV-1 infection.
Annette Oxenius,Sarah Fidler,Michael Brady,Sara J. Dawson,Kate Ruth,Philippa Easterbrook,Jonathan Weber,Rodney E. Phillips,David Price +8 more
TL;DR: It is shown that early and dramatic expansions of functional HIV‐specific CD4+ T lymphocyte frequencies directly ex vivo are demonstrated, indicating that, in some individuals at least, ART must be administered within a narrow window of opportunity during primary HIV‐1 infection to effect substantial immune preservation.
Journal ArticleDOI
An analysis of baseline data from the PROUD study: an open-label randomised trial of pre-exposure prophylaxis
David Dolling,Monica Desai,Alan McOwan,Richard Gilson,Amanda Clarke,Martin Fisher,Gabriel Schembri,Ann Sullivan,Nicola Mackie,Iain Reeves,Mags Portman,John Saunders,Julie Fox,Jake Bayley,Michael Brady,Christine Bowman,Charles J.N. Lacey,Stephen M. Taylor,David White,Simone Antonucci,Mitzy Gafos,Sheena McCormack,ON Gill,David Dunn,Anthony Nardone +24 more
TL;DR: The PROUD study population are at substantially higher risk of acquiring HIV infection sexually than the overall population of GMSM attending sexual health clinics in England, and demonstrate that, despite broad eligibility criteria, the population interested in PrEP was highly selective.
Journal ArticleDOI
Web-Based Activity Within a Sexual Health Economy: Observational Study.
Katy Turner,Adam K. Zienkiewicz,Jonathan Syred,Katharine J Looker,Joia de Sa,Michael Brady,Caroline Free,Gillian Holdsworth,Paula Baraitser +8 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the impact of two interventions on testing activity across a whole sexual health economy shows that users can effectively be transitioned from face-to-face to Web-based services and that this introduces a new population of online users with different demographic and clinical profiles from those who use Web- based services spontaneously.
