An update of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG II

▪ Abstract As better phylogenetic hypotheses become available for many groups of organisms, studies in community ecology can be informed by knowledge of the evolutionary relationships among coexisting species. We note three primary approaches to integrating phylogenetic information into studies of community organization: 1. examining the phylogenetic structure of community assemblages, 2. exploring the phylogenetic basis of community niche structure, and 3. adding a community context to studies of trait evolution and biogeography. We recognize a common pattern of phylogenetic conservatism in ecological character and highlight the challenges of using phylogenies of partial lineages. We also review phylogenetic approaches to three emergent properties of communities: species diversity, relative abundance distributions, and range sizes. One of the most perplexing problems in Western European terrestrial orchid taxonomy has been how to deal with the large numbers of taxa that have been described for the allopolyploid taxa, which are the products of hybridization between taxa in the Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soo group and the D. incarnata (L.) Soo group.

Allotetraploid evolution in Dactylorhiza (Orchidaceae)

Orchis patens has previously been considered to consist of three widely disjunct populations in northern Italy, Algeria/Tunisia and the Canary Islands. The last is already commonly treated as O. canariensis, but because the type of O. patens is from the Algerian populations, the name of the Italian taxon has been in doubt. We here review the taxonomic literature and provide a key to the species of O. section Robustocalcare supported by molecular data recently published for these three taxa. We conclude that Orchis patens subsp. brevicornis is the correct name for the Italian taxon.
