Journal ArticleDOI
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) promotes cell survival by activation of the akt pathway and role for CSN5/JAB1 in the control of autocrine MIF activity
Hongqi Lue,Michael Thiele,J Franz,Edgar Dahl,Stefanie Speckgens,Lin Leng,Gunter Fingerle-Rowson,R Bucala,Bernhard Lüscher,Jürgen Bernhagen +9 more
TL;DR: MIF can directly promote cell survival through activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway and this effect is critical for tumor cell survival.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid and transient activation of the ERK MAPK signalling pathway by macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and dependence on JAB1/CSN5 and Src kinase activity.
Hongqi Lue,Aphrodite Kapurniotu,Gunter Fingerle-Rowson,Thierry Roger,Lin Leng,Michael Thiele,Thierry Calandra,Richard Bucala,Jürgen Bernhagen +8 more
TL;DR: A novel MIF-driven signalling pathway and an intricate regulatory system involving extra- and possibly intracellular MIF, and which likely critically participates in controlling cell proliferation and survival is unravelled.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stabilization of Atherosclerotic Plaques by Blockade of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor After Vascular Injury in Apolipoprotein E–Deficient Mice
Andreas Schober,Jürgen Bernhagen,Michael Thiele,Ute Zeiffer,Sandra Knarren,Marion Roller,Richard Bucala,Christian Weber +7 more
TL;DR: Inhibition of MIF resulted in a shift in the cellular composition of neointimal plaques toward a stabilized phenotype with reduced macrophage/foam cell content and increased SMC content, which might be attributable to a reduction of monocyte recruitment mediated by endothelial MIF.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Cytokine Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Reduces Pro-Oxidative Stress-Induced Apoptosis
Mai Tuyet Nguyen,Hongqi Lue,Robert Kleemann,Michael Thiele,Gabriele Tolle,Doris Finkelmeier,Eva Wagner,Andrea Braun,Jiirgen Bernhagen +8 more
TL;DR: The findings show that Mif has potent antiapoptotic activities and suggest that MIF is a modulator of pro-oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, as well as investigating the effects of MIF on apoptosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Link between macrophage migration inhibitory factor and cellular redox regulation.
Michael Thiele,Jürgen Bernhagen +1 more
TL;DR: The biochemical and biological evidence for a role of the TPOR activity for various MIF functions is summarized and discussed, and the marked functional homologies with Trx proteins, the MIF redox/MHC II link, and recent attempts to discern the intra- versus extracellular roles are dealt with.
