Journal ArticleDOI
Vaginal bacteria modify HIV tenofovir microbicide efficacy in African women
Nichole R. Klatt,Ryan Cheu,Kenzie Birse,Kenzie Birse,Alexander S. Zevin,Michelle Perner,Michelle Perner,Laura Noël-Romas,Laura Noël-Romas,Anna Christina. Grobler,Garrett Westmacott,Irene Y. Xie,Irene Y. Xie,Jennifer. Butler,Jennifer. Butler,Leila E. Mansoor,Lyle R. McKinnon,Lyle R. McKinnon,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Adam Burgener,Adam Burgener,Adam Burgener +26 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided linking vaginal bacteria to microbicide efficacy through tenofovir depletion via bacterial metabolism through bacterial metabolism, which is linked to inconsistent results in women for HIV prevention.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma concentration of injectable contraceptive correlates with reduced cervicovaginal growth factor expression in South African women.
Refilwe P Molatlhegi,Refilwe P Molatlhegi,Lenine J. P. Liebenberg,Lenine J. P. Liebenberg,Alasdair Leslie,Laura Noël-Romas,Laura Noël-Romas,Amanda Mabhula,Nobuhle Mchunu,Michelle Perner,Michelle Perner,Kenzie Birse,Kenzie Birse,Sinaye Ngcapu,Sinaye Ngcapu,John H. Adamson,Katya Govender,Nigel Garrett,Natasha Samsunder,Adam Burgener,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Lyle R. McKinnon,Lyle R. McKinnon,Lyle R. McKinnon +28 more
TL;DR: Data confirm a direct, concentration-dependant effect of DMPA on functionally important immune factors within the vaginal compartment and suggest that women with low DMPA had increases in proteins associated with mucosal fluid function, growth factors, and keratinization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vaginal microbiome-hormonal contraceptive interactions associate with the mucosal proteome and HIV acquisition.
Laura Noël-Romas,Laura Noël-Romas,Michelle Perner,Refilwe P Molatlhegi,Christina Farr Zuend,Amanda Mabhula,Sarah Hoger,Alana Lamont,Kenzie Birse,Kenzie Birse,Alicia R. Berard,Stuart McCorrister,Garett Westmacott,Al Leslie,Vanessa Poliquin,Renee Heffron,Lyle R. McKinnon,Adam Burgener +17 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared relative risk of HIV acquisition in women who were using injectable depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), norethisterone enanthate (NET-EN), and combined oral contraceptives (COC), and non-Lactobacillus dominant women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Understanding mucosal and microbial functionality of the female reproductive tract by metaproteomics: Implications for HIV transmission.
Alicia R. Berard,Alicia R. Berard,Michelle Perner,Michelle Perner,Sarah Mutch,Sarah Mutch,Christina Farr Zuend,Christina Farr Zuend,Peter McQueen,Peter McQueen,Adam Burgener,Adam Burgener,Adam Burgener +12 more
TL;DR: How metaproteomics has been used to study mucosal system components, including epithelial barriers, inflammation, and the microbiome, with a focus on what alterations may contribute to increased HIV transmission risk in women are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Endocervical Regulatory T Cells Are Associated With Decreased Genital Inflammation and Lower HIV Target Cell Abundance
Aloysious Ssemaganda,François Cholette,François Cholette,Michelle Perner,Cheli Kambaran,Wendy Adhiambo,Peter M. Wambugu,Henok Gebrebrhan,Amy Lee,Faisal Nuhu,Ruth S. Mwatelah,Naima Jahan,Tosin E. Omole,Tabitha Wanjiru,Apollo Gitau,Joshua Kimani,Joshua Kimani,Lyle R. McKinnon,Lyle R. McKinnon,Lyle R. McKinnon +19 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the context of genital inflammation, HIV target cell density, and vaginal microbiota in humans.
