Journal ArticleDOI
Nicotinamide riboside supplementation alters body composition and skeletal muscle acetylcarnitine concentrations in healthy obese humans.
Carlijn M. E. Remie,Kay H. M. Roumans,Michiel P.B. Moonen,Niels J. Connell,Bas Havekes,Julian Mevenkamp,Lucas Lindeboom,Vera H. W. de Wit,Tineke van de Weijer,Suzanne A. B. M. Aarts,Esther Lutgens,Esther Lutgens,Bauke V. Schomakers,Hyung L. Elfrink,Rubén Zapata-Pérez,Riekelt H. Houtkooper,Johan Auwerx,Joris Hoeks,Vera B. Schrauwen-Hinderling,Esther Phielix,Patrick Schrauwen +20 more
TL;DR: Nicotinamide riboside supplementation of 1000 mg/d for 6 wk in healthy overweight or obese men and women increased skeletal muscle NAD+ metabolites, affected skeletal muscle acetylcarnitine metabolism, and induced minor changes in body composition and sleeping metabolic rate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human brown adipose tissue: Underestimated target in metabolic disease?
TL;DR: The aim of this review is to give an overview of the differences between classical brown adipocytes and inducible beige adipocytes in humans, and the potential activators of BAT in humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Metabolic responses to mild cold acclimation in type 2 diabetes patients.
Carlijn M. E. Remie,Michiel P.B. Moonen,Kay H. M. Roumans,Emmani B.M. Nascimento,Anne Gemmink,Bas Havekes,Gert Schaart,Esther Kornips,Peter J. Joris,Vera B. Schrauwen-Hinderling,Joris Hoeks,Sander Kersten,Matthijs K. C. Hesselink,Esther Phielix,Wouter D. van Marken Lichtenbelt,Patrick Schrauwen +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, mild cold acclimation for 10 days has been shown to not improve insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes, but only results in mild effects on overnight fasted fat oxidation, post-prandial energy expenditure and aortic augmentation index.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nicotinamide Riboside Enhances In Vitro Beta-adrenergic Brown Adipose Tissue Activity in Humans
Emmani B.M. Nascimento,Michiel P.B. Moonen,Carlijn M. E. Remie,Karim Gariani,Karim Gariani,Johanna A. Jörgensen,Gert Schaart,Joris Hoeks,Johan Auwerx,Wouter D. van Marken Lichtenbelt,Patrick Schrauwen +10 more
TL;DR: NR stimulates in vitro human BAT, however not in vivo BAT in humans, and decreases adipocyte cell size in BAT, which demonstrates the need for further translational research to better understand the differences in NAD + metabolism in mouse and human.
Journal ArticleDOI
Absence of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake using Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in Madelung's disease: A case report.
Michiel P.B. Moonen,Emmani B.M. Nascimento,Marinus J.P.G. van Kroonenburgh,Dees Brandjes,Wouter D. van Marken Lichtenbelt +4 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that cold‐stimulated BAT activity was not detected in lipomas associated with Madelung's disease, and adipose tissue biopsies derived from the lipomas did not express UCP1.
