Identification of Type 1 Diabetes–Associated DNA Methylation Variable Positions That Precede Disease Diagnosis
Vardhman K. Rakyan,Huriya Beyan,Thomas A. Down,Mohammed I. Hawa,Siarhei Maslau,Deeqo Aden,Antoine Daunay,Florence Busato,Charles A. Mein,Burkhard J. Manfras,Kerith-Rae Dias,Christopher G. Bell,Jörg Tost,Bernhard O. Boehm,Stephan Beck,R. David Leslie +15 more
TL;DR: This EWAS of T1D represents an important contribution toward understanding the etiological role of epigenetic variation in type 1 diabetes, and it is also the first systematic analysis of the temporal origins of disease-associated epigenetic variations for any human complex disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heterogeneity of type I diabetes: analysis of monozygotic twins in Great Britain and the United States.
Maria J. Redondo,Liping Yu,Mohammed I. Hawa,Todd MacKenzie,D. A. Pyke,George S. Eisenbarth,Richard David Leslie +6 more
TL;DR: Monozygotic twins of patients with Type I diabetes from two different countries had similar rates of progression to diabetes, with an age-related heterogeneity, and diabetes risk was higher in twins who were heterozygous for DR3-D Q2 and DR4-DQ8 than in twins with neither DR3/DQ2 nor DR4/Q8.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adult-Onset Autoimmune Diabetes in Europe Is Prevalent With a Broad Clinical Phenotype: Action LADA 7
Mohammed I. Hawa,Hubert Kolb,Nanette C. Schloot,Huriya Beyan,Stavroula A Paschou,Raffaella Buzzetti,Didac Mauricio,Alberto de Leiva,Knud Bonnet Yderstræde,Henning Beck-Neilsen,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Cinzia Sarti,Charles Thivolet,David R. Hadden,Steven J. Hunter,Guntram Schernthaner,Werner A. Scherbaum,Rhys Williams,Sinead Brophy,Paolo Pozzilli,Paolo Pozzilli,Richard David Leslie +21 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that adult-onset autoimmune diabetes in Europe encompasses type 1 diabetes and LADA in the same broad clinical and autoantibody-positive spectrum.
Journal ArticleDOI
Concordance rate for Type II diabetes mellitus in monozygotic twins: actuarial analysis
TL;DR: The concordance rate for Type II diabetes in monozygotic twins is very high even in twins initially ascertained discordant for diabetes, a prospective study on 44 non-diabetic subjects each of whom had a sibling twin with diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanism of Metformin Action in Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes
Rodwin A Jackson,Mohammed I. Hawa,Jonathan B. Jaspan,Bushra M Sim,Luciana DiSilvio,David Featherbe,Antony B Kurtz +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that metformin markedly lowers the oral glucose tolerance curve (OGTC) in NIDDM; lowering of the OGTC is due entirely to a fall in the basal glucose concentration; and the reduction in basal HGO and fasting glucose concentrations by met formin is the result of a druginduced increase in hepatic insulin sensitivity.
