Autopsy Prevalence of Tuberculosis and Other Potentially Treatable Infections among Adults with Advanced HIV Enrolled in Out-Patient Care in South Africa
Aaron S. Karat,Tanvier Omar,Anne von Gottberg,Anne von Gottberg,Mpho Tlali,Violet N. Chihota,Gavin J. Churchyard,Gavin J. Churchyard,Katherine Fielding,Katherine Fielding,Suzanne Johnson,Neil A. Martinson,Neil A. Martinson,Kerrigan McCarthy,Kerrigan McCarthy,Nicole Wolter,Nicole Wolter,Emily B. Wong,Salome Charalambous,Alison D. Grant +19 more
TL;DR: Bacterial infections were the leading findings at autopsy among adults with advanced HIV enrolled from primary care clinics, and strategies are needed to identify and direct those at highest risk into a structured pathway that includes expedited investigation and/or treatment of TB and other infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Excess mortality associated with mental illness in people living with HIV in Cape Town, South Africa: a cohort study using linked electronic health records.
Andreas D Haas,Yann Ruffieux,Leigh van den Heuvel,Crick Lund,Crick Lund,Andrew Boulle,Jonathan Euvrard,Catherine Orrell,Hans Prozesky,Nicki Tiffin,Kathryn L. Lovero,Mpho Tlali,Mary-Ann Davies,Milton L. Wainberg +13 more
TL;DR: Excess mortality among people with a history of mental illness occurred independently of HIV treatment success, and interventions to reduce excess mortality should address the complex physical and mental health-care needs of people living with HIV and mental illness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mental health, substance use and viral suppression in adolescents receiving ART at a paediatric HIV clinic in South Africa.
Andreas D Haas,Karl-Günter Technau,Shenaaz Pahad,Kate Braithwaite,Mampho Madzivhandila,Gillian Sorour,Shobna Sawry,Nicola Maxwell,Per M von Groote,Mpho Tlali,Mary-Ann Davies,Matthias Egger,Matthias Egger,Matthias Egger +13 more
TL;DR: Screening outcomes, associated patient characteristics and the odds of unsuppressed viral load in ALHIV screening positive for mental disorders are examined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Algorithm-guided empirical tuberculosis treatment for people with advanced HIV (TB Fast Track): an open-label, cluster-randomised trial.
Alison D. Grant,Salome Charalambous,Mpho Tlali,Aaron S. Karat,Susan E. Dorman,Christopher J. Hoffmann,Suzanne Johnson,Anna Vassall,Gavin J. Churchyard,Katherine Fielding,Katherine Fielding +10 more
TL;DR: The use of a clinical algorithm enabling the initiation of empirical tuberculosis treatment by nurses in primary health-care clinics would reduce mortality compared with standard of care for adults with advanced HIV disease was tested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Universal test-and-treat in Zambian and South African correctional facilities: a multisite prospective cohort study.
Michael E Herce,Michael E Herce,Christopher J. Hoffmann,Katherine Fielding,Katherine Fielding,Stephanie M. Topp,Harry Hausler,Lucy Chimoyi,Helene J. Smith,Candice M. Chetty-Makkan,Rachel Mukora,Mpho Tlali,Abraham J. Olivier,Monde Muyoyeta,Stewart E Reid,Stewart E Reid,Salome Charalambous +16 more
TL;DR: TasP UTT implementation is feasible in correctional settings, and can achieve levels of same-day ART uptake, retention in care, and viral suppression among incarcerated people with HIV that are comparable to those observed in community settings.
