Evolution of the Late Miocene Mediterranean–Atlantic gateways and their impact on regional and global environmental change
Rachel Flecker,Wout Krijgsman,Walter Capella,César C. Martins,Evelina Dmitrieva,Jan Peter Mayser,Alice Marzocchi,Sevasti Modestu,Diana Ochoa,Dirk Simon,M. A. Tulbure,Bas C.J. van den Berg,Marlies Van der Schee,Gert J. de Lange,Rob M. Ellam,Rob Govers,Marcus Gutjahr,Frits Hilgen,Tanja Kouwenhoven,Johanna Lofi,Johanna Lofi,Paul Meijer,Francisco J. TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the Late Miocene gateways and the nature of Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange as deduced from published studies focussed both on the sediments preserved within the fossil corridors and inferences that can be derived from data in the adjacent basins.
Journal ArticleDOI
Messinian astrochronology of the Melilla Basin: stepwise restriction of the Mediterranean – Atlantic connection through Morocco.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the shallow marine marl succession of the Melilla Basin and use magneto-, cyclo-and biostratigraphy to obtain a detailed correlation to the astronomical target curve, resulting in a high resolution time frame for the Late Miocene evolution of the basin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Palaeogeographic evolution of the late Miocene Rifian Corridor (Morocco): Reconstructions from surface and subsurface data
Walter Capella,N. Barhoun,Rachel Flecker,Frederik J Hilgen,Tanja Kouwenhoven,Liviu Matenco,Francisco J. Sierro,M. A. Tulbure,M. Z. Yousfi,Wout Krijgsman +9 more
TL;DR: The Rifian Corridor was one of the Mediterranean-Atlantic seaways that progressively restricted and caused the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) in the early Miocene as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Age refinement and basin evolution of the North Rifian Corridor (Morocco) : No evidence for a marine connection during the Messinian Salinity Crisis
M. A. Tulbure,Walter Capella,N. Barhoun,José-Abel Flores,Frederik J Hilgen,Wout Krijgsman,Tanja Kouwenhoven,F. J. Sierro,M. Z. Yousfi +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present new calcareous plankton biostratigraphic data, using among others an improved planktonic foraminiferal zonal scheme that is based on an assemblage-rather than on a typology-based taxonomic concept.
Journal ArticleDOI
Data on lithofacies, sedimentology and palaeontology of South Rifian Corridor sections (Morocco)
Walter Capella,N. Barhoun,Rachel Flecker,Frederik J Hilgen,Tanja Kouwenhoven,Liviu Matenco,Francisco J. Sierro,M. A. Tulbure,M. Z. Yousfi,Wout Krijgsman +9 more
TL;DR: 39 sections and boreholes crossing the upper Miocene deposits of the Rifian Corridor represent the sedimentary remnants of the marine gateway that connected the Atlantic to the Mediterranean in the late Miocene.
