Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Advances in atomic physics, such as cooling and trapping of atoms and molecules and developments in frequency metrology, have added orders of magnitude to the precision of atom-based clocks and sensors. Applications extend beyond atomic physics and this article reviews using these new techniques to address important challenges in physics and to look for variations in the fundamental constants, search for interactions beyond the standard model of particle physics, and test the principles of general relativity.

The hyperfine field of Francium in iron and the systematics of alkaline fields

A new Brute Force Low Temperature Nuclear Orientation set-up has been installed.The aim of this new apparatus is to search for a tensor component in the weakinteraction. The set-up consists mainly of a 3 He- 4 He dilution refrigerator equippedwith a 17 T superconducting magnet to orient nuclei and a Si PIN photodiodeoperating at a temperature of about 10 K for the detection of ﬂ -particles. Thelowest temperature achieved with this system until now is 4.9 mK in a magneticﬂeld of 0.1 T and 8.6 mK in 14 T. The set-up is now fully operational and the ﬂrsttest measurements of the 60 Co ﬂ -asymmetry have been performed. By using polarized ion beams in combination with the β -NMR technique, the Versatile Ion-polarized Techniques On-line (VITO) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN links together expertise from different fields in an unique experimental setup. An overview of the experimental techniques and a general description of the newly designed beam line are presented. Potential uses in multidisciplinary research and perspectives for future experiments are discussed.
