Journal ArticleDOI
Risk to human health related to the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances in food
Dieter Schrenk,Margherita Bignami,Laurent Bodin,James K. Chipman,Jesús del Mazo,Bettina Grasl-Kraupp,Christer Hogstrand,Laurentius Hoogenboom,Jean-Charles Leblanc,Carlo Nebbia,Elsa Nielsen,Evangelia E. Ntzani,Annette Petersen,Salomon Sand,Christiane Vleminckx,Heather M. Wallace,Lars Barregard,Sandra Ceccatelli,Jean-Pierre Cravedi,Thorhallur I. Halldorsson,Line Småstuen Haug,Niklas Johansson,Helle Katrine Knutsen,Martin Rose,Alain-Claude Roudot,Henk Van Loveren,Günter Vollmer,Karen Mackay,Francesca Riolo,Tanja Schwerdtle +29 more
TL;DR: The CONTAM Panel concluded that parts of the European population exceed this tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of 4.4 ng/kg bw per week, which is of concern, and protects against other potential adverse effects observed in humans.
Journal Article
Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Contaminants in the Food chain on perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and their salts
Diane Benford,J. de Boer,Angelo Carere,A. di Domenico,Niklas Johansson,Dieter Schrenk,Greet Schoeters,P. de Voogt,Elena Dellatte +8 more
TL;DR: The analytical detection method of choice for PFOS and PFOA is currently liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrametry (LC-MS/MS), whereas both LC-MS and GC-MS can be used for the determination of precursors of PFOS, and therefore, figures on levels in food and exposure provided in this opinion should be taken as indicative as discussed by the authors.

Risk to human health related to the presence of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid in food
Helle Katrine Knutsen,Jan Alexander,Lars Barregård,Margherita Bignami,Beat Johannes Brüschweiler,Sandra Ceccatelli,Bruce Cottrill,Michael Dinovi,Lutz Edler,Bettina Grasl-Kraupp,Christer Hogstrand,Laurentius Hoogenboom,Carlo Nebbia,Isabelle P. Halldorsson,Line Småstuen Haug,Niklas Johansson,Henk Van Loveren,Petra Gergelova,Karen Mackay,Sara Levorato,Mathijs van Manen,Tanja Schwerdtle +30 more
TL;DR: For PFOS, the increase in serum total cholesterol in adults, and the decrease in antibody response at vaccination in children were identified as the critical effects and the CONTAM Panel established a tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of 13 ng/kg body weight (bw) per week for PFOS and 6 ng/ kg bw for PFOA.

TL;DR: Chlordane was used for agricultural purposes, mainly for soil and seed treatment and wood protection, the latter being applied mostly in the USA and currently in most other countries worldwide as discussed by the authors, and is included in the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) 2 and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on long-range transboundary air pollution protocol on POPs (CLRTAP-POP).
