Principles of Neural Science

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with neurodegeneration in vulnerable limbic and heteromodal regions of the cerebral cortex, detectable in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging. It is not clear whether abnormalities of cortical anatomy in AD can be reliably measured across different subject samples, how closely they track symptoms, and whether they are detectable prior to symptoms. An exploratory map of cortical thinning in mild AD was used to define regions of interest that were applied in a hypothesis-driven fashion to other subject samples. Results demonstrate a reliably quantifiable in vivo signature of abnormal cortical anatomy in AD, which parallels known regional vulnerability to AD neuropathology. Thinning in vulnerable cortical regions relates to symptom severity even in the earliest stages of clinical symptoms. Furthermore, subtle thinning is present in asymptomatic older controls with brain amyloid binding as detected with amyloid imaging. The reliability and clinical validity of AD-related cortical thinning suggests potential utility as an imaging biomarker. This “disease signature” approach to cortical morphometry, in which disease effects are mapped across the cortical mantle and then used to define ROIs for hypothesis-driven analyses, may provide a powerful methodological framework for studies of neuropsychiatric diseases.

Increasing concerns about environmental issues and depletion of fossil resources lead to a global need for producing more clean energy from renewable sources. For coastal areas or some remote islands, marine tidal current energy is a promising renewable power source due to its high predictability. During the last decades, prototypes of various horizontal and vertical axis marine current turbines (MCT) have been developed around the world. Although reviews on MCTs can be found in some state-of-the-art research papers in the last few years, many of the reported MCT projects were only at the planning/design stage when the papers were written. In fact, some projects do not have any further developments during the several years after their first reporting; and others have already upgraded their original designs and adopted up-scaled versions. In this paper, up-to-date information on large tidal turbine projects over 500 kW is focused. The newest achievements of these large tidal current turbine technologies with their developing histories are presented. These technologies represent the industrial solutions for several pre-commercial MCT farm projects in the coming years. New developments in floating MCT technologies are also included. This paper provides a useful background for researchers in the tidal current energy domain and allows them to know the newest developments in large MCT projects around world.

Developments in large marine current turbine technologies – A review

This paper proposes recognition of Quranic verse recitation focus on Tajweed rules mainly for pronunciation correction using Hidden Markov Models with Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board. It introduces the basic principle of speech recognition system by using two main algorithms which is Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM). In term of HMM module, two different algorithms will be applies, which is Baum-Welch Algorithm for HMM training and Viterbi Algorithm for HMM testing. The most important part on this project is the hardware implementation by using Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board.

Objektif kajian ini meneroka keupayaan tindakan pihak terbabit dalam perniagaan francais di Malaysia berdasarkan kepada ketepatan prinsip al-wakalah. Oleh itu, kajian ini mengaplikasikan metadologi kualitatif untuk mencapai objektif kajian menerusi kaedah perpustakaan berdasarkan bahan rujukan seperti tesis, jurnal dan buku. Selain itu, sesi temubual turut dilakukan bersama pihak berkepentingan dalam perniagaan francais sama ada pengusaha francais dan organisasi sokongan berkaitan. Hasil kajian mendapati prinsip al-wakalah diterapkan dalam menjayakan perniagaan francais terutama kepada aspek pendaftaran, pemasaran produk dan publisiti. Kajian ini mencadangkan prinsip al-wakalah dihayati dengan tekun dalam sistem francais melibatkan perkara yang diharuskan dan ditegah oleh syarak dalam memastikan sistem terbabit dapat berkembang dengan pesat mengikut matlamat yang disasarkan bersama.

Aplikasi Al-Wakalah Terhadap Sistem Perniagaan Francais di Malaysia: Al-Wakalah Application to Franchise Business Systems in Malaysia

An Advance Medical Directive (AMD) is a document in which competent patients express their wishes regarding their preferred choice of future medical plans in the event they become incompetent. AMD is important in relation to the patient's right to refuse treatment. However, they must also consider cultural and religious values of different communities. In Islam, there are several concerns that need to be addressed, namely the validity of the AMD according to Islamic jurisprudence and patients' right to end-of-life decision-making. To address these concerns, this article refers to multiple sources of Islamic jurisprudence, such as the Quran, the tradition of Prophet Muhammad and the works of Islamic scholars related to this topic. Based on the findings, Islam does not forbid the use of AMD as a method to honour patients' wishes in their end-of-life care. Islamic jurisprudence emphasises on the importance of seeking patients' consent before carrying out any medical procedures. However, several conditions need to be given due attention, such as: i) a patient's cognitive capacity during the process of drawing up an AMD; ii) the professional views of medical experts; iii) the involvement of family members in end-of-life care and iv) the limitations of a patient's decision-making in creating an AMD.

Adat dan tradisi pada dasarnya ialah sesuatu kebiasaan yang dipraktikkan secara meluas dalam masyarakat. Ia menjadi pedoman dan rujukan dalam kehidupan seharian masyarakat lingkungan. Dalam amalan adat dan tradisi, terkandung unsur kearifan tempatan hasil corak pemikiran yang dicerakinkan daripada gabungan pengetahuan dan pengamalan generasi terdahulu. Kearifan tempatan adalah serangkaian maklumat, petunjuk, dan kebijaksanaan yang diwariskan daripada generasi ke generasi sebagai satu strategi kehidupan yang melambangkan kemajuan pemikiran dan pengetahuan dalam masyarakat. Dalam disiplin Usul fiqh, perbincangan berkaitan adat dan tradisi adalah termasuk dalam perbincangan uruf. Uruf adalah sekumpulan adat dan tradisi yang dipraktikkan, diketahui dan diiktiraf oleh syara’. Kearifan tempatan adalah produk keintelektualan hasil daripada gabungan amalan adat, tradisi dan panduan daripada wahyu. Gabungan ini menghasilkan kearifan tempatan yang mencorakkan uruf sahih dan uruf fasid. Uruf sahih adalah uruf yang diterima, manakala uruf fasid adalah uruf yang ditolak daripada Islam. Sehubungan dengan itu, kajian ini memfokuskan kedudukan kearifan tempatan daripada perspektif uruf dan syarat-syarat pengambilkiraan kearifan tempatan dalam uruf yang diterima oleh syara’. Bagi mencapai objektif tersebut, kajian ini mengaplikasi kajian kepustakaan sepenuhnya dengan merujuk kepada literatur berkaitan kearifan tempatan dan uruf. Data kualitatif yang dikumpulkan telah dianalisis kandungannya secara deduktif bagi merumuskan kedudukan kearifan tempatan daripada perspektif uruf. Hasil dapatan kajian ialah menunjukkan kearifan tempatan yang berasaskan uruf sahih diterima dan sebaliknya, kearifan tempatan yang berasaskan uruf fasid adalah tidak diterima dalam penetapan hukum Islam.
