Global conservation priorities for crop wild relatives
Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Colin K. Khoury,Colin K. Khoury,Harold A. Achicanoy,Vivian Bernau,Hannes Dempewolf,Ruth J. Eastwood,Luigi Guarino,Ruth H. Harker,Andy Jarvis,Andy Jarvis,Nigel Maxted,Jonas V. Müller,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Chrystian C. Sosa,Paul C. Struik,Holly Vincent,Jane Toll +20 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that a systematic effort is needed to improve the conservation and availability of crop wild relatives for use in plant breeding, using occurrence information collected from biodiversity, herbarium and gene bank databases.
Journal ArticleDOI
A prioritized crop wild relative inventory to help underpin global food security
Holly Vincent,John H. Wiersema,Shelagh Kell,Hannah Fielder,Samantha Dobbie,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Luigi Guarino,Ruth J. Eastwood,Blanca Leόn,Nigel Maxted +10 more
TL;DR: The Harlan and de Wet inventory of globally important crop wild relative (CWR) taxa as discussed by the authors contains 1667 taxa, divided between 37 families, 108 genera, 1392 species and 299 sub-specific taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Origins of food crops connect countries worldwide
Colin K. Khoury,Colin K. Khoury,Harold A. Achicanoy,Anne D. Bjorkman,Carlos E. Navarro-Racines,Luigi Guarino,Ximena Flores-Palacios,Johannes M.M. Engels,John H. Wiersema,Hannes Dempewolf,Steven Sotelo,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Cary Fowler,Andy Jarvis,Loren H. Rieseberg,Loren H. Rieseberg,Paul C. Struik +19 more
TL;DR: In this article, the degree to which countries use crops from regions of diversity other than their own (foreign crops) and quantify changes in this usage over the past 50 years was quantified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Crop wild relatives of pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.]: Distributions, ex situ conservation status, and potential genetic resources for abiotic stress tolerance
Colin K. Khoury,Colin K. Khoury,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Harold A. Achicanoy,Chrystian C. Sosa,Vivian Bernau,Vivian Bernau,Mulualem T. Kassa,Sally L. Norton,L. Jos G. van der Maesen,Hari D. Upadhyaya,Hari D. Upadhyaya,Hari D. Upadhyaya,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Andy Jarvis,Andy Jarvis,Paul C. Struik +19 more
TL;DR: The potential for pigeonpea CWR to be further employed in crop improvement is assessed by compiling wild species occurrence and ex situ conservation information, producing geographic distribution models for the species, identifying gaps in the comprehensiveness of current germplasm collections, and using ecogeographic information to identify CWR populations with the potential to contribute agronomic traits of priority to breeders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensiveness of conservation of useful wild plants: An operational indicator for biodiversity and sustainable development targets
Colin K. Khoury,Colin K. Khoury,Daniel Amariles,Jonatan Stivens Soto,Maria Victoria Diaz,Steven Sotelo,Chrystian C. Sosa,Chrystian C. Sosa,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Julian Ramirez-Villegas,Harold A. Achicanoy,Jorge Velásquez-Tibatá,Luigi Guarino,Blanca León,Blanca León,Carlos E. Navarro-Racines,Carlos E. Navarro-Racines,Nora P. Castañeda-Álvarez,Hannes Dempewolf,John H. Wiersema,John H. Wiersema,Andy Jarvis,Andy Jarvis +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a gap analysis indicator methodology that provides a pragmatic estimate of the comprehensiveness of conservation of the genetic diversity within useful wild plants, both ex situ and in situ.
