Extreme Marine Heatwaves Alter Kelp Forest Community Near Its Equatorward Distribution Limit

TL;DR: In this paper, a recent extreme warming event (2014-2016) of unprecedented magnitude and duration in the California Current System allowed them to evaluate the response of the kelp forest community near its southern (warm) distribution limit.
Journal ArticleDOI

Just ten percent of the global terrestrial protected area network is structurally connected via intact land.

TL;DR: It is shown that while ~40% of the terrestrial planet is intact, only 9.7% of Earth’s terrestrial protected network can be considered structurally connected, which means those important areas set aside for conservation outcomes will remain (or become) connected.
Journal ArticleDOI

Marine heat waves threaten kelp forests

TL;DR: Despite increasing climate-change advocacy and the overwhelming evidence demonstrating social and ecological impacts of climate change, political denial and inaction are jeopardizing society's ability to respond adequately to the multifaceted consequences of the accelerating pace of climate-driven loss of marine forests.
Journal ArticleDOI

Marine Spatial Planning in a Transboundary Context: Linking Baja California with California's Network of Marine Protected Areas

TL;DR: In this paper, the Ensendense eco-region, a shared marine ecosystem between the south of California, United States of America (USA), and the north of Baja California, Mexico, where conservation actions differ across the border.
