Radar Imaging of Binary Near-Earth Asteroid (66391) 1999 KW4
Steven J. Ostro,Jean-Luc Margot,Lance A. M. Benner,Jon D. Giorgini,Daniel J. Scheeres,Eugene G. Fahnestock,Stephen B. Broschart,Julie Bellerose,Michael C. Nolan,Christopher Magri,Petr Pravec,P. Scheirich,Randy Rose,Raymond F. Jurgens,Eric De Jong,S. Suzuki +15 more
TL;DR: High-resolution radar images reveal near-Earth asteroid (66391) 1999 KW4 to be a binary system that is dominated by an equatorial ridge at the object's potential-energy minimum and has exotic physical and dynamical properties.
Journal ArticleDOI
Photometric Survey of Binary Near-Earth Asteroids
Petr Pravec,P. Scheirich,Peter Kusnirak,Lenka Šarounová,Stefano Mottola,G. Hahn,Peter Brown,G. Esquerdo,N. Kaiser,Z. Krzeminski,Donald P. Pray,Brian D. Warner,Alan W. Harris,Michael C. Nolan,Ellen S. Howell,Lance A. M. Benner,Jean-Luc Margot,Adrian Galad,W. Holliday,Michael D. Hicks,Yu. N. Krugly,David J. Tholen,Robert J. Whiteley,Franck Marchis,D. R. Degraff,A. Grauer,Stephen Larson,F. P. TL;DR: In this article, photometric data on 17 binary near-Earth asteroids (15 of them are certain detections, two are probables) were analyzed and characteristic properties of the near Earth asteroid (NEA) binary population were inferred.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamical configuration of binary near-Earth asteroid (66391) 1999 KW4.
Daniel J. Scheeres,Eugene G. Fahnestock,Steven J. Ostro,Jean-Luc Margot,Lance A. M. Benner,Stephen B. Broschart,Julie Bellerose,Jon D. Giorgini,Michael C. Nolan,Christopher Magri,Petr Pravec,P. Scheirich,Randy Rose,Raymond F. Jurgens,E. M. de Jong,S. Suzuki +15 more
TL;DR: Dynamical simulations of the coupled rotational and orbital dynamics of binary near-Earth asteroid 66391 suggest that it is excited as a result of perturbations from the Sun during perihelion passages.
Journal ArticleDOI
The tumbling spin state of (99942) Apophis
Petr Pravec,P. Scheirich,Josef Ďurech,Joe Pollock,Peter Kusnirak,Kamil Hornoch,Adrian Galad,David Vokrouhlický,Alan W. Harris,Emmanuel Jehin,Jean Manfroid,Cyrielle Opitom,Michaël Gillon,François Colas,Julian Oey,J. Vrastil,J. Vrastil,Daniel E. Reichart,K. M. Ivarsen,J. B. Haislip,Aaron P. LaCluyze +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the theory of asteroid nutational damping by Breiter et al. and found that slowly tumbling asteroids predominate in the spin rate-size range where their estimated damping times are greater than about 0.2 Gyr.
Journal ArticleDOI
Science case for the Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM): A component of the Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission
Patrick Michel,Andrew F. Cheng,Michael Küppers,Petr Pravec,Jürgen Blum,Marco Delbo,Simon F. Green,Pascal Rosenblatt,Kleomenis Tsiganis,Jean-Baptiste Vincent,Jens Biele,Valérie Ciarletti,Alain Herique,Stephan Ulamec,Ian Carnelli,Andres Galvez,Lance A. M. Benner,Shantanu P. Naidu,Olivier S. Barnouin,Derek C. Richardson,Andrew S. Rivkin,P. Scheirich,Nicholas Moskovitz,Audrey Thirouin,Stephen R. Schwartz,A. Campo Bagatin,Yang Yu +26 more
TL;DR: This paper focuses on the science return of AIM, the current knowledge of its target from ground-based observations, and the instrumentation planned to get the necessary data.
