Advances in flavonoid research since 1992.

Over the past decade, the most significant, conceptual advances in the field of fluorination were enabled most prominently by organo- and transition-metal catalysis. The most challenging transformation remains the formation of the parent C-F bond, primarily as a consequence of the high hydration energy of fluoride, strong metal-fluorine bonds, and highly polarized bonds to fluorine. Most fluorination reactions still lack generality, predictability, and cost-efficiency. Despite all current limitations, modern fluorination methods have made fluorinated molecules more readily available than ever before and have begun to have an impact on research areas that do not require large amounts of material, such as drug discovery and positron emission tomography. This Review gives a brief summary of conventional fluorination reactions, including those reactions that introduce fluorinated functional groups, and focuses on modern developments in the field.

Alcohols can be temporarily converted into carbonyl compounds by the metal-catalysed removal of hydrogen. The carbonyl compounds are reactive in a wider range of transformations than the precursor alcohols and can react in situ to give imines, alkenes, and α-functionalised carbonyl compounds. The metal catalyst, which had borrowed the hydrogen, then returns it to the transformed carbonyl compound, leading to an overall process in which alcohols can be converted into amines, compounds containing CC bonds and β-functionalised alcohols.

Introduction. Currently, a number of semi-synthetic of natural plant compounds have been developed to improve its effectiveness for treatment of cancers. In the present study, we investigated the anti-proliferative activity and apoptosis induction of MUC-30 in human breast cancer cells (MCF-7). MUC-30, a semi- synthetic analog of lignan, isolated from Phyllanthus taxodiifolius Beille (Krai Hang Nak). Methods. MCF-7 cells were treated with various concentrations of MUC-30 (0.01-10 µM) for 24-72 h and cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. The anti-proliferative effect of the compound to MCF-7 cells via apoptosis pathway was determined by using DAPI assay, flow cytometry analysis, and the protein expression of PARP-1. Results. MUC-30 potently inhibited the proliferation of MCF-7 cells in a concentration- and time-related manners. Its IC50 (concentration that inhibits 50% of cell growth) was approximately 0.23 ± 0.07 µM at 72 h. The compound induced morphological changes of nucleus, caused an accumulation of apoptotic cell in subG0 phase, and induced the expression of cleaved PARP-1. Conclusion. MUC-30 is a promising potent anti-proliferative agent for MCF-7 cells by inducing apoptosis. Highly Diastereoselective Alkylation of Vicinal Dianions of Chiral Succinic Acid Derivatives: A New General Strategy to (R)‐β‐Arylmethl‐γ‐butyrolactones.

Moringa oleifera Lam(M.oleifera), is generally found in tropical areas, South Asia and Thailand. It has been used for the treatment of various diseases including inflammation. However, little is known about its anti-inflammatory activity. We, therefore studied the effect of crude extracts from leaves (Methanol and hexane fractions) of M. oleifera on the production of nitric oxide (NO), a pro-inflammatory substance in highly aggressively proliferating immortalized (HAPI) microglial cells activated by lipopolysaccharide(LPS) and found that the extracts from M. oleifera significantly suppressed nitric oxide production in a dose dependent manner. This preliminary result demonstrates that the anti-inflammatory activity of the crude extracts of M. oleifera leaves is due partly through the inhibition of NO production and suggests that M. oleifera may have neuroprotective potential in neurodegenerative diseases caused by neuroinflammation.

General Strategy for Stereoselective Synthesis of 1-Substituted exo,endo-2,6-Diaryl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanes: Total Synthesis of (.+-.)-Gmelinol (I).

The reaction of an (E)-samarium dienolate, generated by the regioselective reductive cleavage of a phenylsulfonyl activated cyclopropyl ketone with samarium(II) iodide, with aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes gives the 2-substituted anti-1,3-diol monoester derivatives, stereoselectively, in good to excellent yields. The results represent the first report of a dienolate in the aldol-Tishchenko reaction and also provide an optically active polyol with (R)-glyceraldehyde.
