Journal ArticleDOI
Induction of ectopic eyes by targeted expression of the eyeless gene in Drosophila
TL;DR: By targeted expression of the ey complementary DNA in various imaginal disc primordia of Drosophila, ectopic eye structures were induced on the wings, the legs, and on the antennae and support the proposition that ey is the master control gene for eye morphogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pax-6 in development and evolution
TL;DR: This review presents recent data on the structural and functional characterization of Pax-6 homologues from species of different animal phyla and discusses the implications of these findings for the understanding of the development and evolution of eyes and nervous systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
ACE-inhibition induces a cardioprotective transcriptional response in the metabolic syndrome heart
Aziza Yakubova,Lieven Thorrez,Dmitry Svetlichnyy,Liesbeth Zwarts,Veerle Vulsteke,Griet Laenen,Wouter Oosterlinck,Yves Moreau,Luc Dehaspe,Jeroen Van Houdt,Álvaro Cortés-Calabuig,Bart De Moor,Patrick Callaerts,Paul Herijgers +13 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that MetS and control murine hearts have unique transcriptional profiles and exhibit a partially specific transcriptional response to ACE-inhibition, which appears to counteract some of the MetS-specific pathways, while also activating cardioprotective mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Eyeless initiates the expression of both sine oculis and eyes absent during Drosophila compound eye development
TL;DR: It is shown that eyeless induces and requires the expression of both genes independently during extra eye development, and that in the embryonic head, sine oculis acts in parallel to eyeless and twin of eyeless, a second Pax-6 gene from Drosophila.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disrupted function and axonal distribution of mutant tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase in dominant intermediate Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy.
Albena Jordanova,Albena Jordanova,Joy Irobi,Florian P. Thomas,Patrick Van Dijck,Kris Meerschaert,Maarten Dewil,Ines Dierick,An Jacobs,Els De Vriendt,Velina Guergueltcheva,Chitharanjan V Rao,Ivailo Tournev,Francisco de Assis Aquino Gondim,Marc D'Hooghe,Veerle Van Gerwen,Patrick Callaerts,Ludo Van Den Bosch,Jean-Pierre Timmermans,Wim Robberecht,Jan Gettemans,Johan M. Thevelein,Peter De Jonghe,Ivo Kremensky,Vincent Timmerman +24 more
TL;DR: YARS is the second aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase found to be involved in CMT, thereby linking protein-synthesizing complexes with neurodegeneration.
