Lievense,Patrick S. Covello,Jay D. Keasling,K. K. Reiling,N. S. Renninger,Jack D. Newman +49 more
TL;DR: The strains and processes described here form the basis of a viable industrial process for the production of semi-synthetic artemisinin to stabilize the supply of art Artemisinin for derivatization into active pharmaceutical ingredients (for example, artesunate) for incorporation into ACTs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seed-Specific Over-Expression of an Arabidopsis cDNA Encoding a Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase Enhances Seed Oil Content and Seed Weight
Colette Jako,Arvind Kumar,Yangdou Wei,Jitao Zou,Dennis L. Barton,E. Michael Giblin,Patrick S. Covello,David C. Taylor +7 more
TL;DR: The current study confirms the important role of DGAT in regulating the quantity of seed triacylglycerols and the sink size in developing seeds and shows for the first time that seed-specific over-expression of the DGAT cDNA in wild-type Arabidopsis enhances oil deposition and average seed weight, which are correlated with DGAT transcript levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
RNA Editing in Plant Mitochondria
TL;DR: An editing phenomenon that involves the conversion of cytidine to uridine at multiple positions in the mRNA for subunit II of cytochrome c oxidase in wheat mitochondria is reported, providing an explanation for apparent coding anomalies in plant mitochondria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Artemisia annua L. (Asteraceae) trichome-specific cDNAs reveal CYP71AV1, a cytochrome P450 with a key role in the biosynthesis of the antimalarial sesquiterpene lactone artemisinin.
TL;DR: The identification of the CYP71AV1 gene should allow for the engineering of semi‐synthetic production of artemisinin in appropriate plant or microbial hosts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alteration of seed fatty acid composition by an ethyl methanesulfonate-induced mutation in Arabidopsis thaliana affecting diacylglycerol acyltransferase activity.
Vesna Katavic,Darwin W. Reed,D. C. Taylor,E. M. Giblin,Dennis L. Barton,Jitao Zou,Samuel L. MacKenzie,Patrick S. Covello,Ljerka Kunst +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that changes to triacylglycerol biosynthesis can result in dramatic changes in fatty acid composition and, in particular, in the accumulation of VLCFAs in seed storage lipids.
