Journal ArticleDOI
Neoangiogenesis-related genes are hallmarks of fast-growing hepatocellular carcinomas and worst survival. Results from a prospective study
Erica Villa,Rosina Maria Critelli,Barbara Lei,Guido Marzocchi,Calogero Cammà,Gianluigi Giannelli,Patrizia Pontisso,Giuseppe Cabibbo,Marco Enea,Stefano Colopi,Cristian Caporali,Teresa Pollicino,Fabiola Milosa,Aimilia Karampatou,Paola Todesca,Elena Bertolini,Livia Maccio,María L. Martínez-Chantar,Elena Turola,Mariagrazia Del Buono,Nicola De Maria,Stefano Ballestri,Filippo Schepis,Paola Loria,Giorgio Enrico Gerunda,Luisa Losi,Umberto Cillo +26 more
TL;DR: The hepatic five-gene signature was able to predict HCC growth in individual patient and the consequent risk of death and implies a role of this molecular tool in the future therapeutic management of patients with HCC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of an attachment site for human liver plasma membranes on hepatitis B virus particles
Patrizia Pontisso,Maria Grazia Ruvoletto,Wolfram H. Gerlich,Klaus-Hinrich Heermann,Romeo Bardini,Alfredo Alberti +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that purified virus particles from a virus carrier bind also specifically to plasma membranes of human liver.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Carriers
Giovanna Fattovich,Alessandro Tagger,L. Brollo,Giuliano Giustina,Patrizia Pontisso,Giuseppe Realdi,Alfredo Alberti,Arturo Ruol +7 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the existence of a subgroup of patients with anti-HBe-positive, HBV-DNA-negative, HDV-negative chronic hepatitis B, where HCV may play a leading role in causing liver disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Liver cell apoptosis in chronic hepatitis C correlates with histological but not biochemical activity or serum HCV-RNA levels.
Fiorella Calabrese,Patrizia Pontisso,Elena Pettenazzo,Luisa Benvegnù,A Vario,Liliana Chemello,Alfredo Alberti,Marialuisa Valente +7 more
TL;DR: The concept that immune‐mediated apoptosis may play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C is supported and this type of reaction may occur in the absence of significant alanine transaminase (ALT) elevation, thus explaining the lack of correlation between biochemical activity and liver histological damage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long‐term follow‐up of anti‐HBe‐positive chronic active hepatitis B
Giovanna Fattovich,L. Brollo,Alfredo Alberti,Patrizia Pontisso,Giuliano Giustina,Giuseppe Realdi +5 more
TL;DR: The prognosis of anti‐HBe‐positive patients with chronic hepatitis B is poor, as 54% of the cases developed cirrhosis during a mean histologic follow‐up period of 4.5 years, mainly in association with hepatitis delta virus infection or continuing hepatitis B virus replication.
