Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of intraoperative awareness with explicit recall in an unselected surgical population: a randomized comparative effectiveness trial.
George A. Mashour,Amy Shanks,Kevin K. Tremper,Sachin Kheterpal,Christopher R. Turner,Satya Krishna Ramachandran,Paul Picton,Christa M. Schueller,Michelle Morris,John C. Vandervest,Nan Lin,Michael S. Avidan +11 more
TL;DR: This negative trial could not detect a difference in the incidence of definite awareness or recovery variables between monitoring protocols based on either BIS values or anesthetic concentration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neurophysiologic Correlates of Ketamine Sedation and Anesthesia: A High-density Electroencephalography Study in Healthy Volunteers
Phillip E. Vlisides,Tarik Bel-Bahar,UnCheol Lee,Duan Li,Hyoungkyu Kim,Ellen Janke,Vijay Tarnal,Adrian Pichurko,Amy M. McKinney,Bryan S Kunkler,Paul Picton,George A. Mashour +11 more
TL;DR: Ketamine anesthesia correlates most clearly with distinct changes in the theta bandwidth, including increased power and functional connectivity, suggesting a dose-dependent effect.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship of critical dynamics, functional connectivity, and states of consciousness in large-scale human brain networks.
Heonsoo Lee,Daniel Golkowski,Denis Jordan,Denis Jordan,Sebastian Berger,Rüdiger Ilg,Rüdiger Ilg,Joseph Lee,George A. Mashour,UnCheol Lee,Michael S. Avidan,Stefanie Blain-Moraes,Goodarz Golmirzaie,Randall Hardie,Rosemary Hogg,Ellen Janke,Max B. Kelz,Kaitlyn Maier,Hannah R. Maybrier,Andrew R. McKinstry-Wu,Maxwell R. Muench,Andrew Ochroch,Ben J.A. Palanca,Paul Picton,E. Marlon Schwarz,Vijay Tarnal,Giancarlo Vanini,Phillip E. Vlisides +27 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the partial phase locking at criticality shapes the functional connectivity and asymmetric anterior‐posterior PLE topography, with low (high) PLE for high (low) degree nodes, which differentiates various pharmacologic and pathologic states of consciousness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Subanaesthetic ketamine and altered states of consciousness in humans
Phillip E. Vlisides,Tarik S. Bel-Bahar,Amanda Nelson,K. Chilton,Ezra E. Smith,Ellen Janke,Vijay Tarnal,Paul Picton,Richard E. Harris,George A. Mashour +9 more
TL;DR: Ketamine induces altered states of consciousness during periods of reduced alpha power in the precuneus and temporal‐parietal junction, which are candidate mechanisms of the psychoactive effects of ketamine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Network Efficiency and Posterior Alpha Patterns Are Markers of Recovery from General Anesthesia: A High-Density Electroencephalography Study in Healthy Volunteers.
Stefanie Blain-Moraes,Stefanie Blain-Moraes,Vijay Tarnal,Giancarlo Vanini,Tarik Bel-Behar,Ellen Janke,Paul Picton,Goodarz Golmirzaie,Ben J.A. Palanca,Michael S. Avidan,Max B. Kelz,George A. Mashour +11 more
TL;DR: Network efficiency was significantly depressed and network clustering coefficient was significantly increased during unconsciousness; these graph theoretical measures returned to baseline during the 3 h recovery period and Posterior alpha power may be a potential biomarker for normal recovery of functional brain networks after general anesthesia.
