An era of exploring the interactions of high-intensity, hard X-rays with matter has begun with the start-up of a hard-X-ray free-electron laser, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). Understanding how electrons in matter respond to ultra-intense X-ray radiation is essential for all applications. Here we reveal the nature of the electronic response in a free atom to unprecedented high-intensity, short-wavelength, high-fluence radiation (respectively 10(18) W cm(-2), 1.5-0.6 nm, approximately 10(5) X-ray photons per A(2)). At this fluence, the neon target inevitably changes during the course of a single femtosecond-duration X-ray pulse-by sequentially ejecting electrons-to produce fully-stripped neon through absorption of six photons. Rapid photoejection of inner-shell electrons produces 'hollow' atoms and an intensity-induced X-ray transparency. Such transparency, due to the presence of inner-shell vacancies, can be induced in all atomic, molecular and condensed matter systems at high intensity. Quantitative comparison with theory allows us to extract LCLS fluence and pulse duration. Our successful modelling of X-ray/atom interactions using a straightforward rate equation approach augurs favourably for extension to complex systems.

Femtosecond electronic response of atoms to ultra-intense X-rays

Relativistic interaction of short-pulse lasers with underdense plasmas has recently led to the emergence of a novel generation of femtosecond x-ray sources. Based on radiation from electrons accelerated in plasma, these sources have the common properties to be compact and to deliver collimated, incoherent, and femtosecond radiation. In this article, within a unified formalism, the betatron radiation of trapped and accelerated electrons in the so-called bubble regime, the synchrotron radiation of laser-accelerated electrons in usual meter-scale undulators, the nonlinear Thomson scattering from relativistic electrons oscillating in an intense laser field, and the Thomson backscattered radiation of a laser beam by laser-accelerated electrons are reviewed. The underlying physics is presented using ideal models, the relevant parameters are defined, and analytical expressions providing the features of the sources are given. Numerical simulations and a summary of recent experimental results on the different mechanisms are also presented. Each section ends with the foreseen development of each scheme. Finally, one of the most promising applications of laser-plasma accelerators is discussed: the realization of a compact free-electron laser in the x-ray range of the spectrum. In the conclusion, the relevant parameters characterizing each sources are summarized. Considering typical laser-plasma interaction parameters obtained with currently available lasers, examples of the source features are given. The sources are then compared to each other in order to define their field of applications.

Femtosecond x rays from laser-plasma accelerators

We review the recent developments in the electric field control of magnetism in multiferroic heterostructures, which consist of heterogeneous materials systems where a magnetoelectric coupling is engineered between magnetic and ferroelectric components. The magnetoelectric coupling in these composite systems is interfacial in origin, and can arise from elastic strain, charge, and exchange bias interactions, with different characteristic responses and functionalities. Moreover, charge transport phenomena in multiferroic heterostructures, where both magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters are used to control charge transport, suggest new possibilities to control the conduction paths of the electron spin, with potential for device applications.

Electric field control of magnetism in multiferroic heterostructures

Laser excitation of nanometer-sized atomic and molecular clusters offers various opportunities to explore and control ultrafast many-particle dynamics. Whereas weak laser fields allow the analysis of photoionization, excited-state relaxation, and structural modifications on these finite quantum systems, large-amplitude collective electron motion and Coulomb explosion can be induced with intense laser pulses. This review provides an overview of key phenomena arising from laser-cluster interactions with focus on nonlinear optical excitations and discusses the underlying processes according to the current understanding. A general survey covers basic cluster properties and excitation mechanisms relevant for laser-driven cluster dynamics. Then, after an excursion in theoretical and experimental methods, results for single-photon and multiphoton excitations are reviewed with emphasis on signatures from time- and angular-resolved photoemission. A key issue of this review is the broad spectrum of phenomena arising from clusters exposed to strong fields, where the interaction with the laser pulse creates short-lived and dense nanoplasmas. The implications for technical developments such as the controlled generation of ion, electron, and radiation pulses will be addressed along with corresponding examples. Finally, future prospects of laser-cluster research as well as experimental and theoretical challenges are discussed.

Laser-driven nonlinear cluster dynamics

Status of Athos, the soft X-ray FEL line of SwissFEL

We have measured the relative single and double photoionization cross-section of magnesium from 22 to 70 eV photon energy using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Below 54 eV the photon energy dependence of the ratio can be modeled by a suitably scaled helium double-to-single photoionization ratio. However, to our surprise, a previously proposed scaling model for that ratio does not work in the case of Mg. From the near-threshold double-photoionization cross section we estimate the range of validity of the Wannier threshold law to be about 0.7 eV with a rather small cross section near threshold.

THz Streak Camera for FELTemporal Diagnostics: Concepts and Considerations

Fast absolute pulse energy measurements at SwissFEL

We have produced hard x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) pulses, which are chirped both in photon energy and in spatial position. The experiments have been carried out at the hard x-ray beamline Aramis at SwissFEL, located at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. The FEL beamline was operated without any external focusing and with a tilted, energy-chirped electron bunch, whose properties are then transferred to the photon beam. The resulting FEL pulses were used for a single-shot absorption x-ray spectroscopy experiment at the Alvra endstation.
