Journal ArticleDOI
Using Amplicon Deep Sequencing to Detect Genetic Signatures of Plasmodium vivax Relapse
Jessica T. Lin,Nicholas J. Hathaway,David L. Saunders,Chanthap Lon,Sujata Balasubramanian,Oksana Kharabora,Panita Gosi,Sabaithip Sriwichai,Laurel B. Kartchner,Char Meng Chuor,Prom Satharath,Charlotte A. Lanteri,Jeffrey A. Bailey,Jonathan J. Juliano +13 more
TL;DR: Deep sequencing at a highly variable region of the P. vivax merozoite surface protein 1 gene revealed impressive diversity-generating 67 unique haplotypes and detecting on average 3.6 cocirculating parasite clones within individuals, compared to 2.1 clones detected by a combination of 3 microsatellite markers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of Two versus Three-Day Regimens of Dihydroartemisinin-Piperaquine for Uncomplicated Malaria in Military Personnel in Northern Cambodia: An Open-Label Randomized Trial
Chanthap Lon,Jessica E. Manning,Pattaraporn Vanachayangkul,Mary So,Darapiseth Sea,Youry Se,Panita Gosi,Charlotte A. Lanteri,Suwanna Chaorattanakawee,Sabaithip Sriwichai,Soklyda Chann,Worachet Kuntawunginn,Nillawan Buathong,Samon Nou,Douglas S. Walsh,Stuart D. Tyner,Jonathan J. Juliano,Jessica T. Lin,Michele D. Spring,Delia Bethell,Jaranit Kaewkungwal,Douglas B. Tang,Char Meng Chuor,Prom Satharath,David L. Saunders +24 more
TL;DR: In the brief period since introduction of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, there is early evidence suggesting declining efficacy relative to previous reports, which warrants improved monitoring of clinical outcomes and follow-up, given few available alternative drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fighting the good fight: the role of militaries in malaria elimination in Southeast Asia
Jessica E. Manning,Prom Satharath,Jariyanart Gaywee,Maria Nila Lopez,Chanthap Lon,David L. Saunders +5 more
TL;DR: Considerations for military involvement in regional malaria elimination efforts are reviewed, given their high mobility, frequent malaria exposure, and potential for asymptomatic carriage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of CYP2D6 Genotypes and Predicted Phenotypes in a Cohort of Cambodians at High Risk for Infections with Plasmodium vivax.
Michele D. Spring,Michele D. Spring,Chanthap Lon,Somethy Sok,Darapiseth Sea,Mariusz Wojnarski,Soklyda Chann,Worachet Kuntawunginn,Thay Kheang Heng,Samon Nou,Montri Arsanok,Sabaithip Sriwichai,Pattaraporn Vanachayangkul,Jessica T. Lin,Jessica E. Manning,Krisada Jongsakul,Sathit Pichyangkul,Prom Satharath,Philip L. Smith,Lek Dysoley,David L. Saunders,Norman C. Waters +21 more
TL;DR: CYP2D6 genotypes from 96 volunteers from Oddor Meanchey Province, Cambodia, an area endemic for Plasmodium vivax are determined, finding a 54.2% frequency of the *10 allele, which could translate into increased risk of PQ radical cure failure and repeated relapses, making interruption of transmission and malaria elimination difficult to achieve.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution and Temporal Dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum Chloroquine Resistance Transporter Mutations Associated With Piperaquine Resistance in Northern Cambodia.
Biraj Shrestha,Zalak Shah,Andrew P. Morgan,Piyaporn Saingam,Chaiyaporn Chaisatit,Suwanna Chaorattanakawee,Chantida Praditpol,Nonlawat Boonyalai,Paphavee Lertsethtakarn,Mariusz Wojnarski,Molly Deutsch-Feldman,Matthew Adams,Darapiseth Sea,Soklyda Chann,Stuart D. Tyner,Charlotte A. Lanteri,Michele D. Spring,David L. Saunders,Philip L. Smith,Chanthap Lon,Panita Gosi,Somethy Sok,Prom Satharath,Huy Rekol,Dysoley Lek,Brian Vesely,Jessica T. Lin,Norman C. Waters,Shannon Takala-Harrison +28 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimated the prevalence of co-circulating piperaquine resistance mutations in P. falciparum isolates collected in northern Cambodia from 2009 to 2017.
