Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Chemistry of Carbon Nanotubes

Engineered nanoparticles have the potential to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases; for example, by allowing the targeted delivery of a drug to particular subsets of cells. However, so far, such nanoparticles have not proved capable of surmounting all of the biological barriers required to achieve this goal. Nevertheless, advances in nanoparticle engineering, as well as advances in understanding the importance of nanoparticle characteristics such as size, shape and surface properties for biological interactions, are creating new opportunities for the development of nanoparticles for therapeutic applications. This Review focuses on recent progress important for the rational design of such nanoparticles and discusses the challenges to realizing the potential of nanoparticles.

Strategies in the design of nanoparticles for therapeutic applications

It is shown that, taking into account tendencies in the development of new laser technologies, the study of the effect of laser light on microorganisms is a topical and important ecological problem. The results of studies of the role played by the spatiotemporal coherence of laser radiation from the viewpoint of the action of the radiation on bacterial cells are presented. It is found that the coherence of light does not cause any changes in microorganisms under natural conditions (in the presence of photosensitizers in natural concentrations). Based on computer modeling and experimental studies, it is shown that the dynamics of speckles does not affect the stability of bacterial cells.

Biophysical aspects of effects of laser radiation on living systems: II. Effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria

A real time functional Near-InfraRed Imager (fNIRI) was presented in this paper. We developed a continuous wave (cw) light imaging probe which includes 9 light sources and 4 pairs detectors (each pair has one 850 nm filtered detector and one 760 nm filtered detector). There are 16 measurement sections and total detection area is 9 cm X 4 cm. The detector- source uses 2.5 cm spacing. The light sources are controlled by a computer and the signals from the detectors are converted and processed in real time by the computer. The user-friendly software was programmed with Visual C++ language. Relative changes of oxy-Hb, Hb, and total blood concentration in 16 channels and the corresponding images combined by 16 channels could be displayed in real time on computer. With this cw imaging probe, we have measured motor function in motor cortex area, visual function in occipital area, and cognitive activity in frontal forehead area of the human brain when the subjects are stimulated by moving fingers, viewing a flashing light and doing an analogy test, respectively. The experimental results show that the cw imaging probe can be used for functional images of brain activity, based upon changes of oxygenation and blood volume due to the stimulus.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is a wave of neuronal and glial depolarization that propagates across the cortex at a rate of 2–5 mm/min accompanied by reversible electroencephalogram (EEG) suppression, a negative shift of direct current (DC) potential, and change of optical intrinsic signals (OIS). Propagation velocity of CSD is an important parameter used to study this phenomenon. It is commonly determined in an electrophysiological way that measures the time required for a CSD wave to pass along two electrodes. Since the electrophysiology technique fails to reveal the spreading pattern of CSD, velocity calculated in this manner might be inaccurate. Accurately determining propagation velocity of cortical spreading depression in rats by optical intrinsic signal imaging

We proposed and analyzed the D-P (Dye-to-Photon) photobleaching mechanism, the interaction between the excitation photon(s) and the fluorophore dye molecules in excited states. At single molecule level, the D-P photobleaching probability with One- and Two-photon excitation (OPE and TPE) should always depend linearly on the probability of fluorophore molecule in excited states. However, at biological imaging level, the dependence of the D-P photobleaching probability on the probability of fluorophore molecules in excited states may depend on the excitation way: the photobleaching states, while the photobleaching rate depends on the high-order power of the probability of fluorophore molecule in the excited states, especially in the case of high excitation intensity.
