Ambient air pollution and the progression of atherosclerosis in adults.
Nino Künzli,Michael Jerrett,Raquel Garcia-Esteban,Xavier Basagaña,Bernardo Beckermann,Frank D. Gilliland,Merce Medina,John M. Peters,Howard N. Hodis,Wendy J. Mack +9 more
TL;DR: This is the first study to report an association between exposure to air pollution and the progression of atherosclerosis – indicated with CIMT change – in humans, and suggests that air pollution may contribute to the acceleration of cardiovascular disease development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gender differences in prevalence, diagnosis and incidence of allergic and non-allergic asthma: a population-based cohort
Bénédicte Leynaert,Jordi Sunyer,Raquel Garcia-Esteban,Cecilie Svanes,Deborah Jarvis,Isa Cerveri,Julia Dratva,Thorarinn Gislason,Joachim Heinrich,Christer Janson,Nino Kuenzli,Roberto de Marco,Ernst Omenaas,Chantal Raherison,Francisco Gómez Real,M. Wjst,Elisabeth Zemp,Mahmoud Zureik,Peter Burney,Josep M. Antó,Françoise Neukirch +20 more
TL;DR: This study shows that female sex is an independent risk factor for non-allergic asthma, and stresses the need for more careful assessment of possible non- allergic asthma in clinical practice, in men and women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Surrounding greenness and pregnancy outcomes in four Spanish birth cohorts.
Payam Dadvand,Jordi Sunyer,Xavier Basagaña,Ferran Ballester,Aitana Lertxundi,Ana Fernández-Somoano,Marisa Estarlich,Raquel Garcia-Esteban,Michelle A. Mendez,Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen +9 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest a beneficial impact of surrounding greenness on measures of fetal growth but not pregnancy length, and Stratified analyses indicated stronger associations among children of mothers with lower education, suggesting greater benefits from around greenness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Maternal smoking habits and cognitive development of children at age 4 years in a population-based birth cohort
TL;DR: An association with maternal smoking during pregnancy and lowered cognitive development in children at age 4 years is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI

Verhulst,Tanja G. M. Vrijkotte,Michael Wilhelm,Bert Brunekreef,Göran Pershagen,Jordi Sunyer +43 more
TL;DR: Air pollution exposure during pregnancy, particularly NO2, was associated with delayed psychomotor development during childhood, and the public health impact of the small changes observed at an individual level could be considerable.
