The Movement of Aquatic Mercury Through Terrestrial Food Webs
Daniel A. Cristol,Rebecka L. Brasso,Anne M. Condon,Rachel E. Fovargue,Scott L. Friedman,Kelly K. Hallinger,Adrian P. Monroe,Ariel E. White +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that aquatic mercury pollution can move into terrestrial habitats, where it biomagnifies to levels in songbirds that may cause adverse effects, and is a threat to the many bird species that feed on predatory invertebrates in adjacent riparian habitats.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of mercury exposure on the reproductive success of tree swallows ( Tachycineta bicolor )
TL;DR: An experimental tree swallow population was established in the headwaters of the Shenandoah River, Virginia, USA to assess the accumulation and effects of mercury contamination on birds that eat emergent aquatic insects as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Happy feet in a hostile world? The future of penguins depends on proactive management of current and expected threats
Yan Ropert-Coudert,André Chiaradia,David G. Ainley,Andrés Barbosa,P. Dee Boersma,Rebecka L. Brasso,Meagan Dewar,Ursula Ellenberg,Pablo García-Borboroglu,Louise Emmerson,Rachel P. Hickcox,Stéphanie Jenouvrier,Akiko Kato,Rebecca R. McIntosh,Phoebe J. Lewis,Phoebe J. Lewis,Francisco Ramírez,Valeria Ruoppolo,Peter G. Ryan,Philip J. Seddon,Richard B. Sherley,Ralph Eric Thijl Vanstreels,Lauren Waller,Eric J. Woehler,Phil N. Trathan +24 more
TL;DR: A review of threats faced by the world's 18 species of penguins is presented in this paper, where the authors discuss alterations to their environment at both breeding sites on land and at sea where they forage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mercury exposure and survival in free-living tree swallows ( Tachycineta bicolor )
TL;DR: A small difference in survival between mercury-contaminated and reference sites is unlikely to impact population viability in this short-lived species; however, some songbirds accumulate mercury to a greater degree than tree swallows and do not possess the migratory behavior that removes swallows to less contaminated areas for the majority of the year.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ornithogenic soils and the paleoecology of pygoscelid penguins in Antarctica
TL;DR: Stable isotope analysis of δ 15 N and δ 13 C in ancient and modern Adelie penguin tissues and guano support the ‘krill surplus’ hypothesis in showing a dietary shift from fish to krill over the past ∼200 years.
