TL;DR: A review of threats faced by the world's 18 species of penguins is presented in this paper, where the authors discuss alterations to their environment at both breeding sites on land and at sea where they forage.

TL;DR: An updated assessment framework is devised that introduces the option of using a dynamic baseline to assess future impacts of conservation over the short term to avoid misleading results which were generated in a small number of cases, and redefines short term as 10 years to better align with conservation planning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Applying science to pressing conservation needs for penguins.

TL;DR: The Steering Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission Penguin Specialist Group determined that the penguin species in most critical need of conservation action are African penguin, Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus), and Yellow‐eyed penguin(Megadyptes antipodes).

TL;DR: The number of Cape cormorants breeding in South Africa decreased by nearly 50% from approximately 107 000 pairs in 1977-1981 to 57 000 pairs between the Orange River estuary and Dassen Island.

A Cursory Look at the Fishmeal/Oil Industry From an Ecosystem Perspective
Lynne J. Shannon,Lauren Waller +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors summarize the global context of marine sourced fishmeal and then use the South African marine ecosystem as a working example, drawing on research into the trophic role of forage fish in marine ecosystems and ponders whether a reduced demand for fishmeal, given increasing global pressures such as climate change, could benefit our marine ecosystems.
