Journal ArticleDOI
Mutations in the Genes for Oocyte-Derived Growth Factors GDF9 and BMP15 Are Associated with Both Increased Ovulation Rate and Sterility in Cambridge and Belclare Sheep (Ovis aries)
James P Hanrahan,Scott M. Gregan,Philippe Mulsant,Michael P. Mullen,George H. Davis,Richard Powell,S. M. Galloway +6 more
TL;DR: This is the first time that a mutation in the gene for GDF9 has been found that causes increased ovulation rate and infertility in a manner similar to inactivating mutations in BMP15, and shows that GDF 9 is essential for normal folliculogenesis in sheep.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative Genome Analysis of the Primary Sex-Determining Locus in Salmonid Fishes
Rachael A. Woram,Karim Gharbi,Takashi Sakamoto,Bjørn Høyheim,Lars-Erik Holm,Kerry A. Naish,Colin R. McGowan,Moira M. Ferguson,Ruth B. Phillips,Jake Stein,René Guyomard,Margaret Cairney,John B. Taggart,Richard Powell,William S. Davidson,Roy G. Danzmann +15 more
TL;DR: Placement of the sex-determining region appears telomeric in brown trout, Atlantic salmon, and Arctic charr, whereas an intercalary location for SEX may exist in rainbow trout, and three hypotheses are proposed to account for the relocation.
Journal ArticleDOI
A simple method for subcloning DNA fragments from gel slices.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis and management of resistance to chemotherapeutants in salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae).
Ian Denholm,Gregor J. Devine,Tor Einar Horsberg,Sigmund Sevatdal,Anders Fallang,Damien V Nolan,Richard Powell +6 more
TL;DR: What lessons have been learnt from contending with resistance in terrestrial organisms, the implications for sustainable use of chemotherapeutants in aquaculture, and the potential for developing effective resistance management strategies are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Linkage Map for Brown Trout (Salmo trutta): Chromosome Homeologies and Comparative Genome Organization With Other Salmonid Fish
Karim Gharbi,Karim Gharbi,Angélique Gautier,Roy G. Danzmann,Sonia Gharbi,Takashi Sakamoto,Bjørn Høyheim,John B. Taggart,Margaret Cairney,Richard Powell,Francine Krieg,Nobuaki Okamoto,Moira M. Ferguson,Lars-Erik Holm,René Guyomard +14 more
TL;DR: Map alignments with orthologous regions in Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and Arctic char revealed extensive conservation of syntenic blocks across species, which was generally consistent with chromosome divergence through Robertsonian translocations.
