The role of biotic interactions in shaping distributions and realised assemblages of species: implications for species distribution modelling
Mary S. Wisz,Julien Pottier,W. Daniel Kissling,Loïc Pellissier,Jonathan Lenoir,Jonathan Lenoir,Christian Damgaard,Carsten F. Dormann,Mads C. Forchhammer,John-Arvid Grytnes,Antoine Guisan,Risto K. Heikkinen,Toke T. Høye,Ingolf Kühn,Miska Luoto,Luigi Maiorano,Marie-Charlotte Nilsson,Signe Normand,Erik Öckinger,Niels Martin Schmidt,Mette Termansen,Allan Timmermann,David A. Wardle,Peter Aastrup,Jens-Christian Svenning +24 more
TL;DR: It is shown that biotic interactions have clearly left their mark on species distributions and realised assemblages of species across all spatial extents, and is called for for accelerated collection of spatially and temporally explicit species data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Extinction debt: a challenge for biodiversity conservation.
Mikko Kuussaari,Riccardo Bommarco,Risto K. Heikkinen,Aveliina Helm,Jochen Krauss,Regina Lindborg,Erik Öckinger,Meelis Pärtel,Joan Pino,Ferran Rodà,Constantí Stefanescu,Tiit Teder,Martin Zobel,Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter +13 more
TL;DR: Standardized long-term monitoring, more high-quality empirical studies on different taxa and ecosystems and further development of analytical methods will help to better quantify extinction debt and protect biodiversity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of consensus methods in predictive species distribution modelling
TL;DR: In this article, the authors tested the predictive accuracies of five consensus methods, namely Weighted Average (WA), Mean(All), Median(All, Median(PCA), and Best, for 28 threatened plant species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Methods and uncertainties in bioclimatic envelope modelling under climate change
Risto K. Heikkinen,Miska Luoto,Miguel B. Araújo,Raimo Virkkala,Wilfried Thuiller,Martin T. Sykes +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors review a number of critical methodological issues that may lead to uncertainty in predictions from bioclimatic modelling. But, they conclude that, although biOClimatic envelope models have important advantages, they need to be applied only when users of models have a thorough understanding of their limitations and uncertainties.
Journal ArticleDOI
Habitat fragmentation causes immediate and time‐delayed biodiversity loss at different trophic levels
Jochen Krauss,Riccardo Bommarco,Moisès Guardiola,Risto K. Heikkinen,Aveliina Helm,Mikko Kuussaari,Regina Lindborg,Erik Öckinger,Meelis Pärtel,Joan Pino,Juha Pöyry,Katja M. Raatikainen,Anu Sang,Constantí Stefanescu,Tiit Teder,Martin Zobel,Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter +16 more
TL;DR: Present-day species richness of long-lived vascular plant specialists was better explained by past than current landscape patterns, indicating an extinction debt, while short-lived butterfly specialists showed no evidence for an extinction Debt at a time scale of c.
