[1] The Solonker suture records the termination of the central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). However, tectonic development of the Solonker suture is poorly understood. We report new field data for the Ondor Sum melange in the Ulan valley, and present a new evaluation of the orogenic belt extending from the southern Mongolia cratonic boundary to the north China craton within the context of a new geological framework and tectonic model, which incorporates relevant data from the literature. The southern accretionary zone between the north China craton and the Solonker suture is characterized by the Mid-Ordovician-Early Silurian Ulan island arc-Ondor Sum subduction-accretion complex and the Bainaimiao arc. This zone was consolidated by the Carboniferous-Permian when it evolved into an Andean-type magmatic margin above a south dipping subduction zone. The northern accretionary zone north of the Solonker suture extends southward from a Devonian to Carboniferous active continental margin, through the Hegenshan ophiolite-arc accretionary complex to the Late Carboniferous Baolidao arc associated with some accreted Precambrian blocks. This northern zone had consolidated by the Permian when it developed into an Andean-type magmatic margin above a north dipping subduction zone. Final subduction of the central Asian ocean caused the two opposing active continental margins to collide, leading to formation of the Solonker suture in the end-Permian. Predominant northward subduction during final formation of the suture gave rise in the upper northern plate to a large-scale, postcollisional, south directed thrust and fold belt in the Triassic-Jurassic. In summary, the CAOB underwent three final stages of tectonic development: early Japanese-type accretion, Andean-type magmatism, and Himalayan-type collision.

A new ICP-MS database for glasses from the Mariana Trough, together with published and new ICP-MS data from the Mariana arc, provides the basis for geochemical mapping of the Mariana arc-basin system. The geochemical maps presented here are based on the graphic representation of spatial variations in geochemical proxies for the principal mantle and subduction components. The focus is on three elements with high and similar partition coefficients but different behavior in subduction systems, namely, Ba, Th, and Nb. Two elements with different partition coefficients, Ta and Yb, are used as normalizing factors. Ratio maps (Ta/Yb, Nb/Ta, Th/Ta, Ba/Ta, Ba/Th) provide the simplest petrogenetic insights, subduction zone addition maps based on deviations from a MORB array provide more quantitative insights, and component maps represent an attempt to isolate the different subduction components. The maps shown here indicate the presence of a variably depleted asthenosphere and three added components: a Nb-Th-Ba component, a Th-Ba deep-subduction component, and a Ba-only shallow-subduction component. The asthenosphere entering the system is enriched relative to N-MORB and appears to be focused at three sites within the Mariana Trough. The Nb-Th-Ba component is present mainly in the north of the arc (the Northern Seamount province and northern Central Island Province), the northern edge of the Mariana Trough, and two locations within the Southern Seamount Province. It has a distinctively high Nb/Ta ratio and a moderate enrichment in Th and Ba relative to Nb. Its composition and distribution indicate that it may not be part of the present subduction system but instead originates in mantle lithosphere previously enriched above the subduction zone by addition of small-degree, subduction-modified mantle melts. The Th-Ba component is present throughout the arc and, in minor amounts, in parts of the back-arc basin. The Ba-only component is mainly present in the central part of the arc and at the edges of the back-arc basin. Overall, the geochemical maps provide a new perspective on the geochemical processes that accompany the evolution of an arc basin system from prerifting lithospheric enrichment, through arc-rifting to arc volcanism and back-arc spreading

Geochemical mapping of the Mariana arc‐basin system: Implications for the nature and distribution of subduction components

We report the results of a geochemical and isotopic study of mostly basaltic glasses recovered from 25 dredge stations along the northernmost 500 km of the Mariana Trough extension axis. The distribution of samples links regions of seafloor spreading to the south with regions farther north where a progression of rifting styles accompanies the earliest stages of back-arc basin extension. Petrographic, chemical and isotopic compositions of igneous rocks reflect the changing styles of extension, with typical back-arc basin basalts in the south which become increasingly similar to arc lavas to the north. Felsic lavas also appear along the extensional axis in the north. Glassy, sparsely phyric basalts characterize regions of seafloor spreading. Felsic lavas and porphyritic basalts occur in the northern, rifting portion. Geochemical and isotopic compositions distinguish between mature arc portions (Ce/Pb 20; ^(206)Pb/^(204)Pb >18.5, ^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr >0.7032, ^eNd 10, Ba/La +7). Samples from along the extensional axis of the northern Mariana Trough show progressive changes in chemical and isotopic compositions, from back-arc basin basalts that formed by seafloor spreading northward through increasingly arc–like basalts, until lavas that are indistinguishable from arc lavas are encountered in the northernmost portion of the rift. Batch-melting models indicate that northernmost rift lavas reflect higher degrees of melting, with 13 ± 5% melting where seafloor spreading occurs, doubling to 28 ± 8% for the northernmost part of the rift axis. The greater degree of melting in the north reflects the greater amount of water added to the mantle source, reflecting the arc-like nature of the source region and melt generation style characteristic of the initial stages of back-arc basin formation. Our data indicate that F = 0.44W + 0.07, where F is the degree of mantle melting and W is the percent water in the mantle. ‘True’ back-arc basin basalts are generated by adiabatic decompression associated with mantle upwelling in mature extensional settings. Eruption of ‘true’ back-arc basin basalts accompanies seafloor spreading, which begins when the basin is 100–150 km wide. The arc is disrupted during early rift formation, because arc magmatism is captured by the extension axis, but the generation of arc melts by hydrous melting of the mantle wedge continues whether or not back-arc extension is occurring. Back-arc basin seafloor spreading requires development of an upwelling mantle flow regime, allowing melting by adiabatic decompression, similar to that responsible for mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). The arc begins to re-form once extension progresses nearly to the point of seafloor spreading.

Geochemical and isotopic data are presented for 18 representative samples from the intraoceanic phase of the Kohistan arc. A restricted range of initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (0.7036–0.7066) and oNd (+2.8 to +7.4) along with measured 206 Pb/ 204 Pb (18.0–18.6) are consistent with formation of the arc complex in an intra-oceanic setting. The isotopic data demonstrate the involvement of enriched, DUPAL-type mantle, suggesting that the Kohistan arc formed at or south of the present equator. Subduction polarity inferred from geochemical and isotopic data indicate that the Chalt Volcanics and Kamila Amphibolites represent a forearc and backarc basin sequence, respectively. These inferences are most simply resolved with a tectonic model whereby the intra-oceanic Kohistan arc evolved over a south-dipping subduction zone, implying that Kohistan and India moved northwards on the same plate, although separated, during much of Cretaceous time. Collision of Kohistan with the Karakorum caused a new, north-dipping subduction zone to form on the south side of Kohistan, leading to collision with India in early Tertiary time.
