This chapter suggests that delinquency conceals two distinct categories of individuals, each with a unique natural history and etiology: A small group engages in antisocial behavior of one sort or another at every life stage, whereas a larger group is antisocial only during adolescence. According to the theory of life-course-persistent antisocial behavior, children's neuropsychological problems interact cumulatively with their criminogenic environments across development, culminating m a pathological personality. According to the theory of adolescence-limited antisocial behavior, a contemporary maturity gap encourages teens to mimic antisocial behavior in ways that are normative and adjustive. There are marked individual differences in the stability of antisocial behavior. The chapter reviews the mysterious relationship between age and antisocial behavior. Some youths who refrain from antisocial behavior may, for some reason, not sense the maturity gap and therefore lack the hypothesized motivation for experimenting with crime.

Adolescence-limited and life-course-persistent antisocial behavior: A developmental taxonomy.

Describes the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), a revision of the Autism Diagnostic Interview, a semistructured, investigator-based interview for caregivers of children and adults for whom autism or pervasive developmental disorders is a possible diagnosis. The revised interview has been reorganized, shortened, modified to be appropriate for children with mental ages from about 18 months into adulthood and linked to ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria. Psychometric data are presented for a sample of preschool children.

Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised: a revised version of a diagnostic interview for caregivers of individuals with possible pervasive developmental disorders

In the context of the development of prototypic assessment instruments in the areas of cognition, personality, and adaptive functioning, the issues of standardization, norming procedures, and the important psychometrics of test reliability and validity are evaluated critically. Criteria, guidelines, and simple rules of thumb are provided to assist the clinician faced with the challenge of choosing an appropriate test instrument for a given psychological assessment. Clinicians are often faced with the critical challenge of choosing the most appropriate available test instrument for a given psychological assessment of a child, adolescent, or adult of a particular age, gender, and class of disability. It is the purpose of this report to provide some criteria, guidelines, or simple rules of thumb to aid in this complex scientific decision. As such, it draws upon my experience with issues of test development, standardization, norming procedures, and important psychometrics, namely, test reliability and validity. As I and my colleagues noted in an earlier publication, the major areas of psychological functioning, in the normal development of infants, children, adolescents, adults, and elderly people, include cognitive, academic, personality, and adaptive behaviors (Sparrow, Fletcher, & Cicchetti, 1985). As such, the major examples or applications discussed in this article derive primarily, although not exclusively, from these several areas of human functioning.

Guidelines, Criteria, and Rules of Thumb for Evaluating Normed and Standardized Assessment Instruments in Psychology.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) comprises a deficit in behavioral inhibition. A theoretical model is constructed that links inhibition to 4 executive neuropsychological functions that appear to depend on it for their effective execution: (a) working memory, (b) self-regulation of affect-motivation-arousal, (c) internalization of speech, and (d) reconstitution (behavioral analysis and synthesis). Extended to ADHD, the model predicts that ADHD should be associated with secondary impairments in these 4 executive abilities and the motor control they afford. The author reviews evidence for each of these domains of functioning and finds it to be strongest for deficits in behavioral inhibition, working memory, regulation of motivation, and motor control in those with ADHD. Although the model is promising as a potential theory of self-control and ADHD, far more research is required to evaluate its merits and the many predictions it makes about ADHD.

to support physicians seeking help.ParticipantsAn American Foundation for Suicide Prevention planning group invited
15 experts on the subject to evaluate the state of knowledge about physician
depression and suicide and barriers to treatment. The group assembled for
a workshop held October 6-7, 2002, in Philadelphia, Pa.EvidenceThe planning group worked with each participant on a preworkshop literature
review in an assigned area. Abstracts of presentations and key publications
were distributed to participants before the workshop. After workshop presentations,
participants were assigned to 1 of 2 breakout groups: (1) physicians in their
role as patients and (2) medical institutions and professional organizations.
The groups identified areas that required further research, barriers to treatment,
and recommendations for reform.Consensus ProcessThis consensus statement emerged from a plenary session during which
each work group presented its recommendations. The consensus statement was
circulated to and approved by all participants.ConclusionsThe culture of medicine accords low priority to physician mental health
despite evidence of untreated mood disorders and an increased burden of suicide.
Barriers to physicians' seeking help are often punitive, including discrimination
in medical licensing, hospital privileges, and professional advancement. This
consensus statement recommends transforming professional attitudes and changing
institutional policies to encourage physicians to seek help. As barriers are
removed and physicians confront depression and suicidality in their peers,
they are more likely to recognize and treat these conditions in patients,
including colleagues and medical students.

Another year has flown by and the CU School of Medicine Rural Track is still going strong! We made a lot of progress in 2016 toward our goal of long-term sustainability. This summer, Dr. Roberto Silva joined the team as the Assistant Director. He was able to attend the graduation celebration as we said farewell to the Class of 2016 and join us for orientation as we welcomed the newest class of medical and physician assistant students to the Rural Track.
