An extensive reef system at the Amazon River mouth
Rodrigo L. Moura,Gilberto M. Amado-Filho,Fernando C. Moraes,Poliana S. Brasileiro,Paulo S. Salomon,Michel Michaelovitch de Mahiques,Alex Cardoso Bastos,Marcelo Gomes de Almeida,Jomar M. Silva,Beatriz Ferreira Araújo,F. P. Brito,Thiago Pessanha Rangel,Braulio Cherene Vaz de Oliveira,Ricardo G. Bahia,Rodolfo Paranhos,Rodolfo Jasão Soares Dias,Eduardo Siegle,Alberto G. Figueiredo,Renato Crespo Pereira,Camille V. Leal,Eduardo Hajdu,Nils E. Asp,Gustavo B. Gregoracci,Sigrid Neumann-Leitão,Patricia L. Yager,Ronaldo B. Francini-Filho,Adriana M. Fróes,Mariana E. Campeão,Bruno S. Silva,Ana Paula B. Moreira,Louisi de Oliveira,Ana Carolina Soares,Lais Silva Araujo,Nara L. Oliveira,João Batista Teixeira,Rogerio Valle,Cristiane C. Thompson,Carlos Eduardo de Rezende,Fabiano L. Thompson +38 more
TL;DR: An extensive carbonate system off the Amazon mouth, underneath the river plume, is presented, providing several insights about the responses of tropical reefs to suboptimal and marginal reef-building conditions, which are accelerating worldwide due to global changes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Three-dimensional distribution of plastic pellets in sandy beaches: shifting paradigms
Alexander Turra,Aruanã B. Manzano,Rodolfo Jasão Soares Dias,Michel Michaelovitch de Mahiques,Lucas Barbosa,Danilo Balthazar-Silva,Fabiana T. Moreira +6 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that plastic pellets present a three-dimensional instead of a simple along-across shore distribution, with surface layers accounting for <10% of the total abundance in the sediment column, suggesting a general pattern whose applicability to microplastics and sedimentary environments as a whole should be investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Alpha Crucis Carbonate Ridge (ACCR): Discovery of a giant ring-shaped carbonate complex on the SW Atlantic margin
Mascimiliano de los Santos Maly,Uri Schattner,Francisco J. Lobo,Rodolfo Jasão Soares Dias,Raissa Basti Ramos,Daniel de Matos Couto,Paulo Y. G. Sumida,Michel Michaelovitch de Mahiques +7 more
TL;DR: It is argued that the ACCR was formed by upward fluid flow along active sub-surface faults and fractures that formed by lateral extension generated by the ascending movement of salt diapirs at depth, an important modern and accessible analogue for a seabed carbonate build-up related to sub- surface hydrocarbon systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
The first biological survey of the Royal Charlotte Bank (SW Atlantic) reveals a large and diverse ecosystem complex
F. Negrão,C.H.F. Lacerda,T.H. Melo,Adalto Bianchini,Emiliano Nicolas Calderon,Clovis B. Castro,Ralf T. S. Cordeiro,Rodolfo Jasão Soares Dias,Ronaldo B. Francini-Filho,F.M. Guebert,Arthur Z. Güth,B. Hetzel,Paulo Antunes Horta,Tito Monteiro da Cruz Lotufo,Michel Michaelovitch de Mahiques,Miguel Mies,Débora O. Pires,K.P. Salvi,Paulo Y. G. Sumida +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a dropcam was deployed in 67 sites and recorded images of macrohabitats and associated biodiversity in the Royal Charlotte Bank (RCB), which is a large and diverse ecosystem complex mostly composed of rhodoliths.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Characterization of the sedimentary wedge off São Sebastião Island, São Paulo
Ivo Vieira da Silva,Isabel Montoya-Montes,Michel Michaelovitch de Mahiques,Javier Alcántara-Carrió,Rodolfo Jasão Soares Dias,Paola Castellano,Francisco J. Lobo,Luis Somoza,Rubens Cesar Lopes Figueira,María José Sánchez-García,Silvia Albarracín +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the genesis and evolution of the sedimentary wedge off Sao Sebastiao Island, located in the Bight of Sao Paulo, southeastern Brazil, and collected seismic and sediment data between 2013 and 2015.
