An extensive reef system at the Amazon River mouth
Rodrigo L. Moura,Gilberto M. Amado-Filho,Fernando C. Moraes,Poliana S. Brasileiro,Paulo S. Salomon,Michel Michaelovitch de Mahiques,Alex Cardoso Bastos,Marcelo Gomes de Almeida,Jomar M. Silva,Beatriz Ferreira Araújo,F. P. Brito,Thiago Pessanha Rangel,Braulio Cherene Vaz de Oliveira,Ricardo G. Bahia,Rodolfo Paranhos,Rodolfo Jasão Soares Dias,Eduardo Siegle,Alberto G. Figueiredo,Renato Crespo Pereira,Camille V. Leal,Eduardo Hajdu,Nils E. Asp,Gustavo B. Gregoracci,Sigrid Neumann-Leitão,Patricia L. Yager,Ronaldo B. Francini-Filho,Adriana M. Fróes,Mariana E. Campeão,Bruno S. Silva,Ana Paula B. Moreira,Louisi de Oliveira,Ana Carolina Soares,Lais Silva Araujo,Nara L. Oliveira,João Batista Teixeira,Rogerio Valle,Cristiane C. Thompson,Carlos Eduardo de Rezende,Fabiano L. Thompson +38 more
TL;DR: An extensive carbonate system off the Amazon mouth, underneath the river plume, is presented, providing several insights about the responses of tropical reefs to suboptimal and marginal reef-building conditions, which are accelerating worldwide due to global changes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rhodolith beds are major CaCO3 bio-factories in the tropical South West Atlantic.
Gilberto M. Amado-Filho,Rodrigo L. Moura,Alex Cardoso Bastos,Leonardo T. Salgado,Paulo Y. G. Sumida,Arthur Z. Güth,Ronaldo B. Francini-Filho,Guilherme H. Pereira-Filho,Douglas P. Abrantes,Poliana S. Brasileiro,Ricardo G. Bahia,Rachel Nunes Leal,Les Kaufman,Joanie Kleypas,Marcos Farina,Fabiano L. Thompson +15 more
TL;DR: These gigantic rhodolith beds, of areal extent equivalent to the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, are a critical, yet poorly understood component of the tropical South Atlantic Ocean.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial patterns of benthic megahabitats and conservation planning in the Abrolhos Bank
Rodrigo L. Moura,Nélio Augusto Secchin,Gilberto M. Amado-Filho,Ronaldo B. Francini-Filho,Matheus Oliveira Freitas,Carolina V. Minte-Vera,João Batista Teixeira,Fabiano L. Thompson,Guilherme Fraga Dutra,Paulo Y. G. Sumida,Arthur Zigliatti Guth,Rubens M. Lopes,Alex Cardoso Bastos +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, a sidescan sonar at the regional scale of the Abrolhos Bank, with ground-truthing by remotely operated vehicles and mixed-gas diving operations, revealed a much more complex habitat mosaic than previously recognized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamics of fish assemblages on coral reefs subjected to different management regimes in the Abrolhos Bank, eastern Brazil
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the benefits of different types of marine protected areas (MPAs) within the same region and found that the effective use of MPAs in the Abrolhos Bank is still dependent on adequate enforcement and the protection of critical habitats such as deep reefs and mangroves.
Journal ArticleDOI
South‐western Atlantic reef fishes: Zoogeographical patterns and ecological drivers reveal a secondary biodiversity centre in the Atlantic Ocean
