Cancer incidence among European man-made vitreous fiber production workers.
Paolo Boffetta,Aage Andersen,Johnni Hansen,Jørgen H. Olsen,Nils Plato,Lyly Teppo,Peter Westerholm,Rodolfo Saracci +7 more
TL;DR: Despite a trend in risk for these neoplasms among the GW workers with time since first employment, the lack of a positive relation with other indirect indicators of fiber exposure points against a causal interpretation means that these lung cancer results are similar to those of a mortality study that included a larger number of factories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Commentary: Call me on my mobile phone…or better not?—a look at the INTERPHONE study results
TL;DR: To provide needed evidence on the potential risk of brain cancer associated with mobile phone use, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) initiated a multi-centre case–control study, the INTERPHONE study, in 1998–99.
Journal ArticleDOI
Second-hand Smoke, Cotinine Levels, and Risk of Circulatory Mortality in a Large Cohort Study of Never-Smokers
Valentina Gallo,David Neasham,Luisa Airoldi,Pietro Ferrari,Mazda Jenab,Paolo Boffetta,Kim Overvad,Anne Tjønneland,Françoise Clavel-Chapelon,Heiner Boeing,Valeria Pala,Domenico Palli,Salvatore Panico,Rosario Tumino,Larraitz Arriola,Eiliv Lund,Bas Bueno-de-Mesquita,Petra H.M. Peeters,Olle Melander,Göran Hallmans,Elio Riboli,Rodolfo Saracci,Paolo Vineis +22 more
TL;DR: Exposure to second-hand smoke at home (as confirmed by plasma cotinine levels) increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality in never-smokers in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Validity of Urinary Biomarkers of Exposure to Tobacco Smoke following Prolonged Storage
TL;DR: Cotinine measurements made in 1988 allowed a clear separation of smokers and non-smokers (sensitivity 92%, specificity 100%), suggesting that concentrations retained their discriminant value even after 10 years of storage.
Journal ArticleDOI
The age-mortality curve of endemic pleural mesothelioma in Karain, Central Turkey.
TL;DR: A marked increase in overall death rates in adults, as well as a higher prevalence of radiological pleural lesions, in Karain than in the nearby and comparable village of Karlik, may indicate a causal association between endemic mesothelioma and inhalation of erionite fibres.
