Biosynthetic Intermediate Analysis and Functional Homology Reveal a Saxitoxin Gene Cluster in Cyanobacteria
Ralf Kellmann,Troco Kaan Mihali,Young Jae Jeon,Russell Pickford,Francesco Pomati,Brett A. Neilan +5 more
TL;DR: The results indicate the evolutionary origin for the production of PSP toxins in an ancestral cyanobacterium with genetic contributions from diverse phylogenetic lineages of bacteria and provide a quantum addition to the catalytic collective available for future combinatorial biosyntheses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of two Pseudomonas putida lipopeptide biosurfactants, putisolvin I and II, which inhibit biofilm formation and break down existing biofilms
Irene Kuiper,Ellen Lagendijk,Russell Pickford,Jeremy P. Derrick,Gerda E. M. Lamers,Jane Thomas-Oates,Ben J. J. Lugtenberg,Guido V. Bloemberg +7 more
TL;DR: Using purified putisolvin I and II it was shown that biofilm formation of different Pseudomonas strains was inhibited and most interestingly, that both putisolvins are also able to break down existing PseUDomonas biofilms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute or chronic upregulation of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation has no net effect on whole-body energy expenditure or adiposity
Kyle L. Hoehn,Nigel Turner,Nigel Turner,Michael M. Swarbrick,Donna Wilks,Elaine Preston,Yu Wei Phua,Himani Joshi,Stuart M. Furler,Mark Larance,Bronwyn D. Hegarty,Bronwyn D. Hegarty,Simon J Leslie,Russell Pickford,Andrew J. Hoy,Edward W. Kraegen,Edward W. Kraegen,David E. James,David E. James,Gregory J. Cooney,Gregory J. Cooney +20 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that negative energy balance is a prerequisite for weight reduction, and increased fatty acid oxidation per se has little, if any, effect to reduce adiposity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Loss of the neuroprotective factor Sphingosine 1-phosphate early in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis
Timothy A. Couttas,Nupur Kain,Benjamin Daniels,Xin Ying Lim,Claire E. Shepherd,Jillian J. Kril,Russell Pickford,Hongyun Li,Brett Garner,Anthony S. Don +9 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrates loss of S1P and sphingosine kinase activity early in AD pathogenesis, and prior to AD diagnosis, suggesting a new link between APOE genotype and pre-disposition to AD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plastic leachates impair growth and oxygen production in Prochlorococcus , the ocean's most abundant photosynthetic bacteria
Sasha G. Tetu,Indrani Sarker,Verena Schrameyer,Russell Pickford,Liam D. H. Elbourne,Lisa R. Moore,Ian T. Paulsen +6 more
TL;DR: It is found plastic leachates impair growth, photosynthetic capacity and cause global changes in transcription, which could influence marine Prochlorococcus community composition and potentially the broader composition and productivity of ocean phytoplankton communities.
