Does Europa have a subsurface ocean? Evaluation of the geological evidence
Robert T. Pappalardo,M. J. S. Belton,H. Herbert Breneman,Michael H. Carr,Clark R. Chapman,Geoffrey C. Collins,Tilmann Denk,Sarah A. Fagents,Paul Geissler,Bernd Giese,Ronald Greeley,Richard Greenberg,James W. Head,Paul Helfenstein,Gregory V. Hoppa,S. D. Kadel,Kenneth P. Klaasen,James E. Klemaszewski,K. Magee,K. Magee,Alfred S. McEwen,Jeffrey M. Moore,William B. Moore,Gerhard Neukum,Cynthia B. Phillips,Louise M. Prockter,Gerald Schubert,David A. Senske,David A. Senske,R. J. Sullivan,B. R. Tufts,Elizabeth P. Turtle,Robert Wagner,K. K. Williams +33 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors summarize the geological evidence regarding an extant subsurface ocean, concentrating on Galileo imaging data and assess nine pertinent lines of geological evidence: impact morphologies, lenticulae, cryovolcanic features, pull-apart bands, chaos, ridges, surface frosts, topography, and global tectonics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chaos on Europa
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that at least 18% of the surface of Europa is fresh appearing chaos, an additional 4% is slightly modified chaos, and much more older chaotic terrain has been overprinted by tectonic structures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Geologic mapping of Europa
Ronald Greeley,P. H. Figueredo,David A. Williams,Frank C. Chuang,James E. Klemaszewski,S. D. Kadel,Louise M. Prockter,Robert T. Pappalardo,James W. Head,Geoffrey C. Collins,N. A. Spaun,Robert Sullivan,Jeffrey M. Moore,David A. Senske,B. Randall Tufts,Torrence V. Johnson,Michael J. S. Belton,Kenneth L. Tanaka +17 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify five primary units (plains, chaos, band, ridge, and crater materials) and their subunits, along with various tectonic structures such as faults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Erosion by flowing lava: Field evidence
Ronald Greeley,Sarah A. Fagents,Robert Scott Harris,S. D. Kadel,David A. Williams,John E. Guest +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors carried out field studies of tube-fed basalt flows, sheet flows of the Columbia River Basalt Province (CRB), and Precambrian komatiites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Galileo imaging observations of lunar maria and related deposits
Ronald Greeley,S. D. Kadel,David A. Williams,Lisa R. Gaddis,James W. Head,Alfred S. McEwen,Scott L. Murchie,Engelbert Nagel,Gerhard Neukum,Carle M. Pieters,Jessica M. Sunshine,Roland Wagner,Michael J. S. Belton +12 more
TL;DR: Galileo images were used to extract compositional information from the Moon using the Solid State Hnaging (SSI) experiment as mentioned in this paper, which indicated that the titanium content of mare deposits' ratios of the 0.76/0.99 gm images indicated 1 gin absorptions associated with Fe 2+ in mafic minerals.
