Human beta-defensins suppress human immunodeficiency virus infection: potential role in mucosal protection.
Lingling Sun,Catherine M. Finnegan,Tina Kish-Catalone,Robert Blumenthal,Paolo Garzino-Demo,Gian Marco La Terra Maggiore,Sid Berrone,Carol Kleinman,Zhibin Wu,Sayed F. Abdelwahab,Wuyuan Lu,Alfredo Garzino-Demo +11 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that, besides a direct inactivation of HIV virions, hBD2 inhibits HIV replication in the intracellular environment, and it is speculated that β-defensins mediate a novel antiretroviral mechanism that contributes to prevention of oral HIV transmission in the oral cavity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alternatively activated macrophages; a double-edged sword in allergic asthma
Mohamed Abdelaziz,Sayed F. Abdelwahab,Sayed F. Abdelwahab,Jie Wan,Wei Cai,Wang Huixuan,Cheng Jianjun,Kesavan Dinesh Kumar,Aparna Vasudevan,Ahmed Sadek,Zhaoliang Su,Shengjun Wang,Huaxi Xu +12 more
TL;DR: The different functions of M2a macrophages (protective and pathogenic roles) in the pathogenesis of asthma are illustrated, including explanation of how different M 2a proteins and markers act during the pathogenic of allergic asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Baculovirus-Derived Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Virus-Like Particles Activate Dendritic Cells and Induce Ex Vivo T-Cell Responses
Luigi Buonaguro,Maria Lina Tornesello,Maria Tagliamonte,Robert C. Gallo,Lai-Xi Wang,Roberta Kamin-Lewis,Roberta Kamin-Lewis,Sayed F. Abdelwahab,George K. Lewis,George K. Lewis,Franco M. Buonaguro +10 more
TL;DR: The results on the interaction and processing of baculovirus HIV-VLPs by MDDCs give an insight into the mechanisms underlying the immune response induced by HIV-VLPAs in vivo.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is hepatitis E virus an emerging problem in industrialized countries
TL;DR: The molecular virology of HEV, mode of transmission in industrialized countries, and potential implications for different specific patient populations are discussed, and novel antiviral compounds are highly needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pertussis toxin and the adenylate cyclase toxin from Bordetella pertussis activate human monocyte-derived dendritic cells and dominantly inhibit cytokine production through a cAMP-dependent pathway.
TL;DR: It is found that the effects of PT and AT on MDDC, including maturation, are mediated by cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP).
