Journal ArticleDOI
Corneal confocal microscopy is a rapid reproducible ophthalmic technique for quantifying corneal nerve abnormalities
Alise Kalteniece,Maryam Ferdousi,Safwaan Adam,Jonathan Schofield,Shazli Azmi,Ioannis N. Petropoulos,Handrean Soran,Rayaz A. Malik +7 more
TL;DR: This study shows that implementing a standardized protocol to select IVCCM images results in high intra and inter-observer reproducibility for all corneal nerve parameters and 6 images are adequate for analysis and could therefore be deployed in large multicenter clinical trials with confidence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early nerve fibre regeneration in individuals with type 1 diabetes after simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation.
Shazli Azmi,Maria Jeziorska,Maryam Ferdousi,Ioannis N. Petropoulos,Georgios Ponirakis,Andrew Marshall,Uazman Alam,Omar Asghar,Andrew Atkinson,Wendy Jones,Andrew J.M. Boulton,Michael Brines,Titus Augustine,Rayaz A. Malik,Rayaz A. Malik +14 more
TL;DR: SPK is associated with early and maintained small nerve fibre regeneration in the cornea and skin, followed by an improvement in neuropathic symptoms and peroneal nerve conduction velocity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Greater corneal nerve loss at the inferior whorl is related to the presence of diabetic neuropathy and painful diabetic neuropathy
Alise Kalteniece,Maryam Ferdousi,Ioannis N. Petropoulos,Shazli Azmi,Safwaan Adam,Hassan Fadavi,Andrew Marshall,Andrew J.M. Boulton,Nathan Efron,Catharina G. Faber,Giuseppe Lauria,Giuseppe Lauria,Handrean Soran,Rayaz A. Malik,Rayaz A. Malik +14 more
TL;DR: Corneal nerve fibre damage is more prominent at the IW, lower in patients with painful compared to painless neuropathy and relates to their QoL, and IWL may provide additional clinical utility for CCM in Patients with DPN.
Journal ArticleDOI
Corneal Nerve Fractal Dimension: A Novel Corneal Nerve Metric for the Diagnosis of Diabetic Sensorimotor Polyneuropathy.
Xin Chen,Jim Graham,Ioannis N. Petropoulos,Georgios Ponirakis,Omar Asghar,Uazman Alam,Andrew Marshall,Maryam Ferdousi,Shazli Azmi,Nathan Efron,Rayaz A. Malik,Rayaz A. Malik +11 more
TL;DR: Assessment of previously established CCM parameters to a novel automated measure of corneal nerve complexity called ACNFrD shows comparable diagnostic efficiency to identify diabetic patients with and without DSPN.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diagnosis of Neuropathy and Risk Factors for Corneal Nerve Loss in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes: A Corneal Confocal Microscopy Study
Maryam Ferdousi,Alise Kalteniece,Shazli Azmi,Ioannis N. Petropoulos,Georgios Ponirakis,Uazman Alam,Omar Asghar,Andrew Marshall,Catherine Fullwood,Catherine Fullwood,Maria Jeziorska,Caroline A. Abbott,Giuseppe Lauria,Catharina G. Faber,Handrean Soran,Nathan Efron,Andrew J.M. Boulton,Rayaz A. Malik,Rayaz A. Malik +18 more
TL;DR: CCM identifies more severe corneal nerve loss in patients with type 1 diabetes compared with type 2 diabetes and shows good diagnostic accuracy for DPN.
