Journal ArticleDOI
Disease-associated epigenetic changes in monozygotic twins discordant for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
Emma Dempster,Ruth Pidsley,Leonard C. Schalkwyk,Sheena Owens,Anna Georgiades,Fergus Kane,Sridevi Kalidindi,Marco Picchioni,Marco Picchioni,Eugenia Kravariti,Timothea Toulopoulou,Robin M. Murray,Jonathan Mill +12 more
TL;DR: A genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation on peripheral blood DNA samples obtained from a unique sample of MZ twin pairs discordant for major psychosis provides further evidence to support a role forDNA methylation differences in mediating phenotypic differences between MZ twins and in the etiology of both SZ and BD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Striatal dopamine synthesis capacity in twins discordant for schizophrenia.
Paul Shotbolt,Paul R. A. Stokes,Sheena Owens,Timothea Toulopoulou,Marco Picchioni,Subrata K. Bose,Robin M. Murray,Oliver D. Howes +7 more
TL;DR: Striatal dopamine synthesis capacity is not elevated in symptom-free individuals at genetic risk of schizophrenia, or in well-treated stable patients with chronic schizophrenia, suggesting that striatal hyperdopaminergia is not a vulnerability marker for schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prefrontal and Striatal Volumes in Monozygotic Twins Concordant and Discordant for Schizophrenia
Ulrich Ettinger,Anne Schmechtig,Timothea Toulopoulou,Charmaine Borg,Claire Orrells,Sheena Owens,Kazunori Matsumoto,Neeltje E.M. van Haren,Mei-Hua Hall,Veena Kumari,Philip McGuire,Robin M. Murray,Marco Picchioni +12 more
TL;DR: The prefrontal cortex shows a heterogeneous pattern of genetic influences on volumetric reductions in schizophrenia, and is determined to be dependent on genetic vulnerability for the condition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic overlap between episodic memory deficits and schizophrenia: results from the Maudsley Twin Study
Sheena Owens,Marco Picchioni,Fruhling Rijsdijk,Daniel Stahl,Evangelos Vassos,A. K. Rodger,David A. Collier,Robin M. Murray,Timothea Toulopoulou +8 more
TL;DR: Verbal memory and visual learning and memory are moderately heritable, share a genetic overlap with schizophrenia and are valid endophenotypes for the condition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic overlap between schizophrenia and selective components of executive function.
Sheena Owens,Fruhling Rijsdijk,Marco Picchioni,Daniel Stahl,Igor Nenadic,Robin M. Murray,Timothea Toulopoulou +6 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that mental flexibility is a purer cognitive process sharing very little common variance with general intellectual functioning, and the inclusion of this mental flexibility phenotype in linkage or association analysis should improve the power to detect susceptibility genes for schizophrenia.
