Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Luminogenic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have attracted much interest since the debut of the AIE concept in 2001. In this critical review, recent progress in the area of AIE research is summarized. Typical examples of AIE systems are discussed, from which their structure–property relationships are derived. Through mechanistic decipherment of the photophysical processes, structural design strategies for generating new AIE luminogens are developed. Technological, especially optoelectronic and biological, applications of the AIE systems are exemplified to illustrate how the novel AIE effect can be utilized for high-tech innovations (183 references).

Aggregation-induced emission

"United we stand, divided we fall."--Aesop. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non-emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM-based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high-tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.

Aggregation-Induced Emission: The Whole Is More Brilliant than the Parts

Pyrene-based materials for organic electronics.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has attracted rapidly growing interest, owing to the high fundamental importance and diverse applications. The study of structure-property correlation of AIE luminogens is of high importance for the design and application of new AIE luminogens. In this contribution, we synthesized two pairs of tetraphenylethene-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole conjugates, and investigated the structure-property correlation of the luminogens. The optical properties, fluorescence lifetimes, electronic structures, electrochemical properties, and electroluminescence properties of the luminogens were comparatively studied. It was found that embedding benzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole moieties into the molecular backbones not only tuned the fluorescence feature of aggregation-enhanced emission to moderate aggregation-caused quenching, but also strongly red-shifted the fluorescence of luminogens from sky-blue to red. The underlying mechanism of this phenomenon was studied and discussed combined with theoretical calculation results. Undoped organic light-emitting diodes with varied electroluminescence colors and good performances are fabricated using these luminogens as light-emitting layers.

Tuning the AIE Activities and Emission Wavelengths of Tetraphenylethene-Containing Luminogens.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated on nanostructured aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO). The nanostructured AZO was formed by selectively etching as-prepared AZO film. The nanostructured AZO serves not only as low-cost indium-free anode but also as internal light extraction structure. OLEDs on it showed a 25.7% efficiency enhancement compared to the conventional ones.

P‐144: Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes Fabricated on Nanostructured AZO: A Low‐Cost Way towards Enhanced Light Extraction for Large Area Lighting Application

Quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) have been extensively studied for applications in display and lighting due to their unique properties of high color saturation, tunable emission color, high brightness, and simple solution processability. [1-2] In this work, we report a multifunctional organic and quantum-dot hybrid tandem device structure that provides an efficient way to obtain full-color tunable LED and high-performance white LED, simultaneously. Only by using an AC drive source, the emission color of the device can be continuously changed from red to green, blue to red, blue to orange and blue to green, indicating the full-color tunable properties of the device. By using the DC drive source, the device can also function as a tandem white device with a high brightness of 107000 cd/m 2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16.91%, and the peak EQE of the device can be further enhanced to 26.02% when employed the higher efficiency phosphorescent B-OLED unit. This work will facilitate the development of new type of full-color tunable emitting pixels and white LEDs, which will further encourage the development of new methods for achieving more excellent displays and lighting sources.

P-9.5: Flexible and vacuum-free fabricated quantum dot-light-emitting diodes

Top-emitting (TE) quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) can exhibit higher light outcoupling efficiency (OCE) compared to bottom-emitting (BE) QLEDs due to the eliminated substrate mode and enhanced microcavity effect. In this study, TE QLEDs with an OCE of over 45% are realized by simultaneously optimizing the thicknesses of both indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) phase tuning layers and IZO top transparent electrodes. To reduce the resistance, the IZO top electrodes are equipped with an auxiliary metal electrode. Consequently, the red QLEDs demonstrate a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 38.2%. Furthermore, by applying a scattering layer on the IZO top electrode, the red QLEDs demonstrate record-breaking efficiencies of EQE 44.5%, power efficiency 92.2 lm W−1, and current efficiency 93.7 cd A−1. The proposed device architecture and optimization strategy contribute to a new design scheme for the preparation of highly efficient QLEDs for displays and lighting applications.
