Journal ArticleDOI

Extensive cryptic species diversity and fine-scale endemism in the marine red alga Portieria in the Philippines

TL;DR: The results indicate that speciation in the marine environment may occur at spatial scales smaller than 100 km, comparable with some terrestrial systems, and the finding of fine-scale endemism has important consequences for marine conservation and management.
Journal Article

New phylogenetic hypotheses for the core Chlorophyta based on chloroplast sequence data

TL;DR: This study seeks to test hypotheses about the monophyly of three traditionally defined and well-studied classes of green algal phylum Chlorophyta by combining high throughput sequencing data from the chloroplast genome with increased taxon sampling, and suggests that while many of the deep relationships are still problematic to resolve, the classes Trebouxiophyceae and Ulvophycee are likely not monophyletic as currently defined.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diversity and Temporal Dynamics of the Epiphytic Bacterial Communities Associated with the Canopy-Forming Seaweed Cystoseira compressa (Esper) Gerloff and Nizamuddin

TL;DR: A clear successional pattern in the epiphytic bacteria of C. compressa over time is observed, suggesting the hypothesis of a possible, but still unexplored, role of the microbial communities in contributing to the extensive ongoing declines of populations of Cystoseira spp.
