Journal ArticleDOI
Extensive cryptic species diversity and fine-scale endemism in the marine red alga Portieria in the Philippines
Dioli Ann Payo,Dioli Ann Payo,Frederik Leliaert,Heroen Verbruggen,Heroen Verbruggen,Sofie D'hondt,Hilconida P. Calumpong,Olivier De Clerck +7 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that speciation in the marine environment may occur at spatial scales smaller than 100 km, comparable with some terrestrial systems, and the finding of fine-scale endemism has important consequences for marine conservation and management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Insights into the Evolution of Multicellularity from the Sea Lettuce Genome
Olivier De Clerck,Shu-Min Kao,Kenny A. Bogaert,Jonas Blomme,Fatima Foflonker,Michiel Kwantes,Emmelien Vancaester,Lisa Vanderstraeten,Eylem Aydogdu,Jens Boesger,Gianmaria Califano,Bénédicte Charrier,Rachel Clewes,Andrea Del Cortona,Sofie D'hondt,Noe Fernandez-Pozo,Claire M. M. Gachon,Marc Hanikenne,Linda Lattermann,Frederik Leliaert,Xiaojie Liu,Christine A. Maggs,Zoë A. Popper,John A. Raven,Michiel Van Bel,Per K.I. Wilhelmsson,Debashish Bhattacharya,Juliet C. Coates,Stefan A. Rensing,Dominique Van Der Straeten,Assaf Vardi,Lieven Sterck,Klaas Vandepoele,Yves Van de Peer,Thomas Wichard,John H. F. Bothwell +35 more
TL;DR: The sequenced genome of Ulva mutabilis, a ubiquitous and iconic representative of the Ulvophyceae or green seaweeds, offers new opportunities to understand coastal and marine ecosystems and the fundamental evolution of the green lineage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides (AXOS) on juvenile Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) performance, immune responses and gastrointestinal microbial community
Zahra Geraylou,Caroline Souffreau,Eugène Rurangwa,Eugène Rurangwa,Sofie D'hondt,Lien Callewaert,Christophe M. Courtin,Jan A. Delcour,Johan Buyse,Frans Ollevier +9 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that AXOS improves sturgeon health through prebiotic action, but the induced effects depend on the specific structure of AXOS.
Journal Article
New phylogenetic hypotheses for the core Chlorophyta based on chloroplast sequence data
Karolina Fučíková,Frederik Leliaert,Endymion D. Cooper,Pavel Škaloud,Sofie D'hondt,O. De Clerck,Carlos Frederico D. Gurgel,Louise A. Lewis,Paul O. Lewis,Juan M. López-Bautista,Charles F. Delwiche,Heroen Verbruggen +11 more
TL;DR: This study seeks to test hypotheses about the monophyly of three traditionally defined and well-studied classes of green algal phylum Chlorophyta by combining high throughput sequencing data from the chloroplast genome with increased taxon sampling, and suggests that while many of the deep relationships are still problematic to resolve, the classes Trebouxiophyceae and Ulvophycee are likely not monophyletic as currently defined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diversity and Temporal Dynamics of the Epiphytic Bacterial Communities Associated with the Canopy-Forming Seaweed Cystoseira compressa (Esper) Gerloff and Nizamuddin
Francesco Paolo Mancuso,Francesco Paolo Mancuso,Sofie D'hondt,Anne Willems,Laura Airoldi,Olivier De Clerck +5 more
TL;DR: A clear successional pattern in the epiphytic bacteria of C. compressa over time is observed, suggesting the hypothesis of a possible, but still unexplored, role of the microbial communities in contributing to the extensive ongoing declines of populations of Cystoseira spp.
