Journal ArticleDOI
Prednisolone or Pentoxifylline for Alcoholic Hepatitis
Mark Thursz,Paul G. Richardson,Michael Allison,Andrew Austin,Megan Bowers,Christopher P. Day,Nichola Downs,Dermot Gleeson,Alastair MacGilchrist,Allister Grant,Steven Hood,Steven Masson,Anne McCune,Jane Mellor,John O'Grady,David Patch,Ian Ratcliffe,Paul Roderick,Louise Stanton,Nikhil Vergis,Mark Wright,Stephen D. Ryder,Ewan Forrest +22 more
TL;DR: Pentoxifylline did not improve survival in patients with alcoholic hepatitis and prednisolone was associated with a reduction in 28-day mortality that did not reach significance and with no improvement in outcomes at 90 days or 1 year.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multigenerational epigenetic adaptation of the hepatic wound-healing response
Müjdat Zeybel,Timothy Hardy,Yi K. Wong,John C. Mathers,Chris Fox,Agata Gackowska,Fiona Oakley,Alastair D. Burt,Caroline L. Wilson,Quentin M. Anstee,Matt J. Barter,Steven Masson,Ahmed M. Elsharkawy,Derek A. Mann,Jelena Mann +14 more
TL;DR: It is probable that a myofibroblast-secreted soluble factor stimulates heritable epigenetic signatures in sperm so that the resulting offspring better adapt to future fibrogenic hepatic insults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcomes following SARS-CoV-2 infection in liver transplant recipients: an international registry study.
Gwilym J. Webb,Thomas Marjot,Jonathan Cook,Costica Aloman,Matthew J. Armstrong,Erica J. Brenner,Maria Andreea Catana,Tamsin Cargill,Renumathy Dhanasekaran,Ignacio García-Juárez,Hannes Hagström,James Kennedy,Aileen Marshall,Steven Masson,Steven Masson,Carolyn Mercer,Ponni V. Perumalswami,Isaac Ruiz,Sarang Thaker,Nneka N. Ufere,Eleanor Barnes,Alfred S. Barritt,Andrew M. Moon +22 more
TL;DR: Liver transplantation was not independently associated with death, whereas increased age and presence of comorbidities were, and factors other than transplantation should be preferentially considered in relation to physical distancing and provision of medical care for patients with liver transplants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma DNA methylation: a potential biomarker for stratification of liver fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Timothy Hardy,Müjdat Zeybel,Christopher P. Day,Christian Dipper,Steven Masson,Stuart McPherson,E Henderson,Dina Tiniakos,Dina Tiniakos,Steve White,Jeremy French,Derek A. Mann,Quentin M. Anstee,Quentin M. Anstee,Jelena Mann +14 more
TL;DR: With further validation, plasma DNA methylation of PPARγ could potentially be used to non-invasively stratify liver fibrosis severity in patients with NAFLD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential DNA methylation of genes involved in fibrosis progression in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease
Müjdat Zeybel,Timothy Hardy,Stuart Robinson,Chris Fox,Quentin M. Anstee,Thomas Ness,Steven Masson,John C. Mathers,Jeremy French,Steve White,Jelena Mann +10 more
TL;DR: DNA methylation status at specific CpGs within genes known to affect fibrogenesis distinguishes between patients with mild from those with severe fibrosis in both NAFLD and ALD, although same C pGs are not equally represented in both etiologies.
