Lutein + zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids for age-related macular degeneration: The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) randomized clinical trial
Emily Y. Chew,Traci E Clemons,John Paul SanGiovanni,Ronald P. Danis,Frederick L. Ferris,Michael J. Elman,Andrew N. Antoszyk,Alan J. Ruby,David H. Orth,Susan B. Bressler,Gary E. Fish,Baker Hubbard,Michael L. Klein,Suresh R. Chandra,Barbara A Blodi,Amitha Domalpally,Thomas R. Friberg,Wai T. Wong,Philip J. Rosenfeld,Elvira Agrón,Cynthia A. Toth,Paul S. Bernstein,Robert Sperdut +22 more
TL;DR: Addition of lutein + zeaxanthin, DHA + EPA, or both to the AREDS formulation in primary analyses did not reduce risk of progression to advanced AMD, but because of potential increased incidence of lung cancer in former smokers, luteIn + zexanthin could be an appropriate carotenoid substitute in the ARedS formulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Photocoagulation Treatment of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: The Second Report of Diabetic Retinopathy Study Findings
Arnall Patz,Stuart L. Fine,Daniel Finkelstein,Thaddeus E. Prout,Lloyd Paul Aiello,Robert Bradley,Jose C. Briones,Frank L. Myers,George H. Bresnick,Guillermo de Venecia,Thomas S. Stevens,Ingolf H. L. Meinert,Jacob Bearman,Suresh Chandra,Lawrence Rand +70 more
TL;DR: Data from the Diabetic Retinopathy Study (DRS) show that photocoagulad inhibited the progression of retinopathy, and beneficial effects were noted to some degree in all those stages of diabeticretinopathy which were included in the Study.
Journal ArticleDOI

Miller,James K. Hooper,Richard S. Crow,Richard Baker,Ronald J. Prineas,Larry D. Hubbard,Yvonne L. Magli,Paul Segal,Richard L. Mowery,Emily Y. Chew,Daniel Seigel,Gary Cassel +147 more
TL;DR: The early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) as mentioned in this paper was a randomized clinical trial of aspirin vs placebo, which was sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NIEI).
Journal ArticleDOI
Secondary Analyses of the Effects of Lutein/Zeaxanthin on Age-Related Macular Degeneration Progression: AREDS2 Report No. 3
Emily Y. Chew,Traci E Clemons,John Paul SanGiovanni,Ronald P. Danis,Frederick L. Ferris,Michael J. Elman,Andrew N. Antoszyk,Alan J. Ruby,David H. Orth,Susan B. Bressler,Gary E. Fish,G. B. Sperduto +22 more
TL;DR: The totality of evidence on beneficial and adverse effects from AREDS2 and other studies suggests that lutein/zeaxanthin could be more appropriate than beta carotene in the AREDs-type supplements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors for choroidal neovascularization in the second eye of patients with juxtafoveal or subfoveal choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related macular degeneration
Maureen G. Maguire,Susan B. Bressler,Neil M. Bresskr,Judith Alexander,Cheryl J. Hiner,Noreen B. Javomik,Deborah A. Phillips,Martaj Marsh,Barbara S. Haivfeins,Dean B. Burgess,Suresh R. Chandra,Michael L. Klein,H. David,Thomas S. Stevens,Stuart L. Fine,Barbara S. Hawhins +15 more
TL;DR: The prognosis of the fellow eye is affected strongly by characteristics of its central macula and by systemic hypertension, and these factors should be considered when counseling patients with unilateral neovascular age-related macular degeneration and when targeting patients for preventive interventions.
