Fusion reactions initiated by laser-accelerated particle beams in a laser-produced plasma

TL;DR: This work proposes and implements a means to drive fusion reactions between protons and boron-11 nuclei by colliding a laser-accelerated proton beam with a Laser-generated borons plasma, and demonstrates a new means for exploring low-energy nuclear reactions such as those that occur in astrophysical plasmas and related environments.
Journal ArticleDOI

Physics issues for shock ignition

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present theoretical analysis and experimental results concerning the major physical issues in the shock-ignition approach, which are the following: generation of a high amplitude shock in the imploding target, laser-plasma interaction physics under the conditions of high laser intensities needed for high-amplitude shock excitation, symmetry and stability of the shock propagation, role of fast electrons in the symmetrization of shock pressure and the fuel preheat.
Journal ArticleDOI

Laser smoothing and imprint reduction with a foam layer in the multikilojoule regime.

TL;DR: This Letter presents first experimental results of the laser imprint reduction in fusion scale plasmas using a low-density foam layer, reproducing the conditions of the initial interaction phase in the direct-drive scheme.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficient multi-keV X-ray sources from laser-exploded metallic thin foils

TL;DR: In this article, a set of materials (titanium, copper, and germanium) have been experimented with at the OMEGA laser facility by irradiating thin foils with a prepulse prior to a main pulse with variable delay, in order to design efficient x-ray laser sources for backlighting, material testing, and code validation.
Journal ArticleDOI

First observation of ion acoustic waves produced by the langmuir decay instability

TL;DR: Thomson scattering measurements are presented which demonstrate conclusively the occurrence of the Langmuir decay instability (LDI) in a laser-produced plasma experiment and the connection with growth and saturation of the stimulated Raman instability is discussed.
