TL;DR: The progress in the ITER Physics Basis (PIPB) document as discussed by the authors is an update of the IPB, which was published in 1999 [1], and provides methodologies for projecting the performance of burning plasmas, developed largely through coordinated experimental, modelling and theoretical activities carried out on today's large tokamaks (ITER Physics R&D).

Disruptions in JET
J.A. Wesson,R. D. Gill,M. Hugon,F. C. Schüller,Joseph Snipes,D.J. Ward,D.V. Bartlett,David Campbell,P. A. Duperrex,A.W. Edwards,Robert Granetz,N. Gottardi,T. C. Hender,E. Lazzaro,P. J. Lomas,N.J. Lopes Cardozo,K. F. Mast,M. F. F. Nave,Neil A. Salmon,P. Smeulders,P.R. Thomas,B.J.D. Tubbing,M.F. Turner,A. Weller +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a two-stage MHD instability, where the first stage is caused by a loss of energy from the central region and the second stage is due to an increase in impurity radiation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of resonant magnetic perturbations on COMPASS-C tokamak discharges
T. C. Hender,Richard Fitzpatrick,A. W. Morris,P. G. Carolan,R.D. Durst,T. Edlington,Jorge Ferreira,S.J. Fielding,P.S. Haynes,J. Hugill,I. Jenkins,R.J. La Haye,B.J. Parham,D.C. Robinson,T.N. Todd,M. Valovic,G. Vayakis +16 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that externally applied static resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) induce stationary magnetic islands, which give rise to a significant degradation in energy and particle confinement, suppression of the sawtooth oscillation and a large change in the impurity ion toroidal velocity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The interaction of resonant magnetic perturbations with rotating plasmas
Richard Fitzpatrick,T. C. Hender +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the penetration of a helical magnetic perturbation into a rotating tokamak plasma is investigated and it is shown that unless the frequency of the imposed perturbations matches closely to one of the natural mode frequencies, reconnection at the rational surface is suppressed by a large factor.
Journal ArticleDOI
Control of Neoclassical Tearing modes by sawtooth control
Olivier Sauter,E. Westerhof,M.-L. Mayoral,B. Alper,P. Belo,R.J. Buttery,A. Gondhalekar,Torbjörn Hellsten,T. C. Hender,D. F. Howell,Thomas Johnson,P. U. Lamalle,M. J. Mantsinen,F. Milani,M. F. F. Nave,F. Nguyen,A. L. Pecquet,S. D. Pinches,S. Podda,Juergen Rapp +19 more
TL;DR: It is shown in the Joint European Torus that NTMs can be readily destabilized by long-period sawteeth, such as obtained by sawtooth stabilization from ion-cyclotron heating or current drive, which has important implications for burning plasma scenarios, as alpha particles strongly stabilize the saweeth.
