Active Control of Type-I Edge-Localized Modes with n=1 Perturbation Fields in the JET Tokamak
Yunfeng Liang,H. R. Koslowski,P.R. Thomas,Eric Nardon,B. Alper,Philip Andrew,Y. Andrew,G. Arnoux,Y. Baranov,M. Becoulet,M. Beurskens,T. M. Biewer,M. Bigi,Kristel Crombé,E. de la Luna,P. de Vries,W. Fundamenski,S.N. Gerasimov,C. Giroud,Mikhail Gryaznevich,N. C. Hawkes,S. Hotchin,D. F. Howell,S. Jachmich,V. G. Kiptily,L. Moreira,V.V. Parail,S. D. Pinches,Elisabeth Rachlew,O. Zimmermann +29 more
TL;DR: Type-I edge-localized modes have been mitigated at the JET tokamak using a static external n=1 perturbation field generated by four error field correction coils located far from the plasma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Control of Neoclassical Tearing modes by sawtooth control
Olivier Sauter,E. Westerhof,M.-L. Mayoral,B. Alper,P. Belo,R.J. Buttery,A. Gondhalekar,Torbjörn Hellsten,T. C. Hender,D. F. Howell,Thomas Johnson,P. U. Lamalle,M. J. Mantsinen,F. Milani,M. F. F. Nave,F. Nguyen,A. L. Pecquet,S. D. Pinches,S. Podda,Juergen Rapp +19 more
TL;DR: It is shown in the Joint European Torus that NTMs can be readily destabilized by long-period sawteeth, such as obtained by sawtooth stabilization from ion-cyclotron heating or current drive, which has important implications for burning plasma scenarios, as alpha particles strongly stabilize the saweeth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Survey of disruption causes at JET
P. de Vries,M.F. Johnson,B. Alper,P. Buratti,T. C. Hender,H. R. Koslowski,V. Riccardo,Jet-Efda Contributors +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a survey of the causes of all 2309 JET disruptions over the last decade of JET operations was carried out to obtain a complete picture of all possible disruption causes, in order to devise better strategies to prevent or mitigate their impact.
Journal ArticleDOI
MHD Spectroscopy through Detecting Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes and Alfvén Wave Cascades
S. E. Sharapov,D. Testa,B. Alper,D. N. Borba,Ambrogio Fasoli,N. C. Hawkes,R.F. Heeter,M. J. Mantsinen,M. von Hellermann +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a new class of modes, the Alfven cascades, excited by energetic ions, were observed in the JET tokamak, and measurements of these Alfven instabilities were used to solve the inverse problem of identifying the plasma parameters using the dependence of the AAF spectrum on equilibrium parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characteristics and scaling of energy and particle losses during Type I ELMs in JET H-modes
A. Loarte,M. Becoulet,G. Saibene,R. Sartori,David Campbell,T. Eich,Albrecht Herrmann,Martin Laux,W. Suttrop,B. Alper,P. J. Lomas,G. F. Matthews,S. Jachmich,J. Ongena,Paolo Innocente +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the relative Type I ELM plasma energy loss (to the pedestal energy) is found to correlate well with the collisionality of the pedestals, showing a weak dependence on the method used to achieve those pedestal plasma parameters: plasma shaping, heating, pellet injection and impurity seeding.
