Journal ArticleDOI
Relative incidence of ESRD versus cardiovascular mortality in proteinuric type 2 diabetes and nephropathy: results from the DIAMETRIC (Diabetes Mellitus Treatment for Renal Insufficiency Consortium) database.
David K. Packham,Tahira P. Alves,Jamie P. Dwyer,Robert C. Atkins,Dick de Zeeuw,Mark E. Cooper,Shahnaz Shahinfar,Julia B. Lewis,Hiddo J.L. Heerspink +8 more
TL;DR: Patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy, characterized by decreased kidney function and significant proteinuria, are more likely to reach ESRD than die during 3 years' mean follow-up, and this has implications for predicting future renal replacement therapy requirements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rate of ESRD Exceeds Mortality among African Americans with Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis
Tahira P. Alves,Xuelei Wang,Jackson T. Wright,Lawrence J. Appel,Tom Greene,Keith C. Norris,Julia B. Lewis +6 more
TL;DR: The rate of ESRD consistently exceeded the various mortality rates across most of the subgroups defined by age, gender, income, education, previous CVD, baseline urine protein excretion, and baseline estimated GFR.
Journal ArticleDOI
Race, kidney disease progression, and mortality risk in HIV-infected persons.
Tahira P. Alves,Todd Hulgan,Pingsheng Wu,Timothy R. Sterling,Samuel E. Stinnette,Peter F Rebeiro,Andrew J. Vincz,Marino A. Bruce,T. Alp Ikizler +8 more
TL;DR: Among all patients, HIV-infected African Americans did not have a statistically significant increased risk for rapid eGFR decline compared with non-African Americans, however, African Americans had a significantly higher risk of ESRD and tended toward a higherrisk of death.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diabetic nephropathy among Mexican Americans.
Subrata Debnath,Farook Thameem,Tahira P. Alves,Jacqueline Nolen,Hania Z. Al-Shahrouri,Shweta Bansal,Hanna E. Abboud,Paolo Fanti +7 more
TL;DR: The epidemiology of DN in Mexican Americans is reviewed, the pathophysiology and associated risk factors are described, and gaps in knowledge and understanding are identified that needs to be addressed by future investigations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chronic kidney disease at presentation is not an independent risk factor for AIDS-defining events or death in HIV-infected persons
Tahira P. Alves,Pingsheng Wu,T. Alp Ikizler,Timothy R. Sterling,Samuel E. Stinnette,Peter F Rebeiro,Suvro Ghosh,Todd Hulgan +7 more
TL;DR: CKD was uncommon in HIV-infected persons presenting for care in this racially diverse cohort, and was not independently associated with risk of developing an ADE or dying during follow-up.
