The Athena x-ray optics development and accommodation
Marcos Bavdaz,Eric Wille,Mark Ayre,Ivo Ferreira,Brian Shortt,Sebastiaan Fransen,Mark Millinger,Maximilien J. Collon,Giuseppe Vacanti,M. Barrière,Boris Landgraf,Mark Olde Riekerink,Jeroen Haneveld,Ronald Start,Coen van Baren,Desiree Della Monica Ferreira,Sonny Massahi,Sara Svendsen,Finn Erland Christensen,Michael Krumrey,Evelyn Handick,Vadim Burwitz,Miranda Bradshaw,Giovanni Pareschi,Giuseppe Valsecchi,Dervis Vernani,Geeta Kailla,William Mundon,Gavin Phillips,Jakob Schneider,Tapio Korhonen,Alejandro Sanchez,Dominique Heinis,Massimiliano Tordi,Richard Willingale +34 more
TL;DR: The Silicon Pore Optics technology (SPO) as mentioned in this paper is a state-of-the-art X-ray optics technology for large-scale space missions. But it is not suitable for the Athena mission, which requires around 700 mirror modules, accurately aligned to produce a common focus.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Optics developments for ATHENA
Marcos Bavdaz,Eric Wille,Mark Ayre,Ivo Ferreira,Brian Shortt,Sebastiaan Fransen,Maximilien J. Collon,Giuseppe Vacanti,Nicolas M. Barrière,Boris Landgraf,Ronald Start,Coen van Baren,Desiree Della Monica Ferreira,Sonny Massahi,Finn Erland Christensen,Michael Krumrey,Vadim Burwitz,Giovanni Pareschi,Giuseppe Valsecchi,Paul Oliver,André Seidel,Tapio Korhonen +21 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a comprehensive technology development plan for the Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA) mission, which is based on the Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) technology.

ATHENA x-ray optics development and accommodation
Marcos Bavdaz,Eric Wille,Mark Ayre,Ivo Ferreira,Brian Shortt,Sebastiaan Fransen,Mark Millinger,Maximilien J. Collon,Giuseppe Vacanti,Nicolas M. TL;DR: The ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics) mission studies and technology preparation are continuing to progress as discussed by the authors, and the optics for this future space observatory is based on the Silicon Pore Optics (SPO), and is being evolved in a joint effort by industry, research institutions and ESA.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Polishing and testing of the 3.5 m SiC M1 mirror of the Herschel space observatory of ESA
TL;DR: In this article, a parabolic M1mirror of silicon carbide (SiC) with large diameter of 35 m, fast focal ratio of f/05 and extreme light-weighting to 25 kg/m 2, which makes the polishing of the mirror a very challenging task.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Integration facility for the ATHENA X-Ray Telescope
Giuseppe Valsecchi,Giovanni Bianucci,Fabio Marioni,Dervis Vernani,Fabio Zocchi,Tapio Korhonen,Mikko Pasanen,Giovanni Pareschi,Ivo Ferreira,Marcos Bavdaz,Eric Wille +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, a dedicated vertical optical bench is designed for the integration of the ATHENA optics, which can be used to assist robot-assisted alignment of the mirror modules.
